Golf de Wimereux is a proper seaside test on France's north coast, shaped by the same ingredients UK golfers love at home: firm turf, natural movement in the ground and a Channel wind that never quite sits still. It was first laid out more than a century ago, back when the British gentry treated this coastline as their playground, and it has been refined over the years into the course you play today.

Set between Calais to the north and Le Touquet to the south, it's a very easy win for anyone planning a Northern France golf break. Plenty of groups slot it in on the way to or from a Le Touquet weekend (this is a popular option), but it's also well worth making time for as a headline round. The Channel crossing is quick (Dover to Calais is 90 minutes by ferry or 35 minutes via Eurotunnel), and the drive from Calais is straightforward, around 30 minutes south along the coast. If you like your golf a bit raw and wind-influenced, you'll feel right at home here.

Wimereux often ranks among France's top courses, and it's a layout worth building a trip around in its own right. The golf feels authentically links in character, with bouncy fairways, low-running approaches and wind that can change the course hole by hole. On clear days you'll see the white cliffs of Dover across the water, a reminder of just how close you are to home, yet the golf has its own distinct French charm in the way the course is presented and the welcome you get in the clubhouse.

Who is this for? UK golfers looking for an easy Channel-coast round to add to a Calais or Le Touquet break, plus groups who want a proper links day without committing to a full UK links tour.

Who is it best for? Golfers who enjoy wind, bouncy fairways and strategic bunkering, particularly mid-handicappers and better who like plotting their way round rather than flying it to every flag.

Wimereux is a classic out-and-back seaside routing with real links character. On a clear day you can pick out the white cliffs of Dover across the water, but don't let the view distract you, the wind off the Channel is the main defence and it can turn a comfortable yardage into a very different shot.

The course plays to 6,726 yards and has hosted professional events over the years, which gives you a fair idea of the standard of the test. The defining features are the pot bunkers and the way the ground feeds slightly-missed shots into trouble, so it rewards placement far more than simply hitting it as hard as you can. You'll find yourself shaping flighted shots and using the slopes if you want to score well, and that's half the fun of playing a proper links.

The front nine eases you in gently before the wind really starts to bite on the back, where the routing turns and you're often hitting into or across the breeze. Par is always a good score when the wind gets up, and if you're bringing a mixed-ability group, the stronger players will enjoy the strategy while higher handicappers will still have fun as long as they keep a sensible club in hand and accept that this is a course where scrambling matters.

The greens are typically firm and fast, with subtle borrows that punish the over-confident, and the pot bunkers are deep enough to cost you a shot if you find one. It's not a long course by modern standards, but it doesn't need to be. The challenge is in the angles, the wind and the way the course asks you to think your way round rather than overpower it.

Looking to build it into a wider trip? It pairs brilliantly with Calais and Le Touquet bases and it's a cracking change of pace if you normally play inland parkland at home. Right, if you want a genuine links test within an hour of the Channel crossing, this is one of the best you'll find on the French coast.

Golf de Wimereux is ranked as one of the best courses in Northern France, and it's an easy one to add to your next short break.

Pretty course with terrific views of the channel. Quite long walks from green to tee, some very interesting holes and well laid out but the fairways were in a very poor condition. We had a 5 hour round as we were stuck behind two fourballs of French ladies who were not in any rush. Is "etiquette" originally a French word? (I think not based on our experience!). Restaurant stops serving at 3pm. Wouldn't rush back.

Played on 21/10. Pretty much had the course to ourselves but that may have been due to the inclement weather forecast? The course is right on the coast so is a lynx course, so not as visually stunning as some of the courses in the region but the greens were excellent and didn’t show any signs of a long season. Would definitely play again. The clubhouse was a little disappointing. The only hot food we could get beforehand was an omelette - which was very nice - but no food available post round. Again, this may be due to the time of year?

Interesting front 9 - linksy and great underfoot despite the previous very rainy days.back 9 provides a great view of the coast and with the low sky it is reminiscent of Scotland. Enjoyed the golf and the club house has a a good feel about it and served decent food ( fish n chips) euro 16. At this time of the year a better option than St Omer

The course was quiet long but a fantastic links layout.a stiff breeze made it difficult but enjoyable. The greens were amazing,

It was a good weather day so perfect. If very windy it would be difficult. Many people playing this day including a golf society of about 30. There was a little waiting but OK. Menu for lunch was a bit limited. Course was perfect and so easily accessible from Calais.
