De Vere Wokefield Estate

Tucked into 250 acres of Berkshire parkland just 10 minutes from the M4, De Vere Wokefield Estate is one of the most popular golf resort escapes in the South of England. The centrepiece is Wokefield Estate Golf Club, a par 72 championship parkland that stretches just under 7,000 yards and features nine lakes, elevated trees and mature oaks threading through every hole. It's a proper test of course management, where water and deep bunkers punish wayward shots, but the setting is beautiful enough to soften the blow of a lost ball or two.

The estate sits within easy reach of London via Reading, with Elizabeth Line and Paddington services making it a straightforward run for a quick escape. It's perfectly placed for golfers in Reading or the capital who need a break from city life. The site comprises three distinct buildings: the modern Wokefield Place, where most golfers stay and where you'll find the Pro Shop, the historic Mansion House and Wellington Lodge. If you fancy the period charm of the Mansion House, just ask when booking.

Wokefield Estate Golf Course

Built as a modern championship test, Wokefield Estate's course is proper parkland golf, framed by mature oaks with water in play often enough to keep you honest. At just under 7,000 yards it's not outrageously long, but it asks for a plan. Nine lakes and plenty of bold bunkering put accuracy and course management front and centre, and the rough can be properly penal if you miss the short stuff, so take plenty of golf balls.

The course is carved through elevated trees along manicured fairways and immaculate putting surfaces. Designer Tim Gaunt has incorporated huge bunkers throughout the routing, placing a premium on smart decision-making rather than hero shots. If I'm honest, it's the kind of track where you'll enjoy it most if you leave the ego in the car park and play the right side of trouble.

The par 5s are the stand-outs, the kind that reward three solid shots rather than hero-ball. The 9th is a classic risk-and-reward dogleg where taking on the water can set up a short approach on this 450-yard hole, but it's a swing you'll only fancy if you're striping it that day.

Signature Hole: 12th (Par 3, 195 yards)

A photogenic one-shotter over water that demands a crisp mid-to-long iron. Find the green and you're not home yet, either, as the undulations can turn a good shot into a nervy two-putt. It's a terrific, beautiful golf hole worthy of a postcard.

There's also a strong practice set-up and driving range, with PGA pros on hand if you want to iron out the damage before you head to the first tee.

Accommodation at De Vere Wokefield Estate

Wokefield's story stretches back to the 1560s, when the original house was built for the affluent Plowden family, and you still feel that heritage in the estate's mix of grand architecture and modern wings. Accommodation is spread across Wokefield Place, the Mansion House and Wellington Lodge, with most golfers opting for the contemporary comfort of Wokefield Place, handy for the Pro Shop and main facilities. If you're after a bit more period character for a special occasion, ask about upgrading to the Mansion House when you book.

Across the resort, rooms are spacious and well set up for golf groups, with satellite TV and complimentary Wi-Fi as standard. All 376 bedrooms come with luxury touches throughout, making them ideal for unwinding after a long day on the course. The public areas are warm and welcoming, with excellent conference facilities for corporate groups who want to mix business with golf.

After your round, the leisure complex is a genuine perk, with a large indoor pool, sauna, gym, tennis courts and an outdoor training area, ideal if you've got non-golfers in the party or you simply fancy loosening the shoulders before tomorrow's tee time.

For food, The View Restaurant focuses on locally sourced ingredients in a relaxed, cosy setting, backed up by a strong wine list including sparkling by the glass. Many weekend golf packages are served in The Pantry in Wokefield Place, typically as a three-course buffet, with upgrades available if you'd rather make dinner feel more like an occasion.

Wokefield sits south-west of London, close to Reading, just 10 minutes from Junction 11 of the M4 and 40 minutes from Heathrow Airport. There are fast, direct trains into London Paddington from Reading Station, plus the Elizabeth Line for quick city access.

The hotel & facilities were overall good. It felt very clean and welcoming. The staff were either very helpful or didn't want to help at all. Some members came across rude. It seemed like they were more eager to help them guests in suits rather than the ones in golf tops. The meal in the evening was extremely limited both nights. Those guests who ate meat were disappointed with the dryness and tasteless options, then the ones who have a plant based diet... well they only had a poor option of potatoes and peas for dinner on 1 night. No option of a plant based desert either. Even for the buffet breakfast the only hot plant based options were beans and hash browns. We have left a complaint and alternatives to the hotel about this and hope that they change it for future vegan guests.

Well it was advertised as de veer Hotel, with nice twin rooms, but ended up next door,on entry only a double bed,had to get it changed for a twin, eat in restaurant first night, then told to eat in a room with a buffet dinner second night,no choice, very upset with the false or no information, to be honest I think you should be ashamed of yourself for advertising this, and at that price was a total rip off for what we got,not what I booked for my 56th birthday, very upset, and will not book another trip with you.

Good , clean and well staffed hotel. Wedding on Saturday in central area made bar access difficult for a while. Do t understand why every plug in the room is unplugged - had to crawl under desk to plug in tablelamp, otherwise room was comfortable.

The hotel internally has had a lot of work done on it but the exterior seems to not have been given the same attention. The area around the Manor House is good but the hotel element is as nice. The staff in the bar are very slow and there was only one member of staff serving on a Saturday night. It took us 20 minutes to get a drink, there was only one table of 5 and a group of lads but this meant that ordering drinks took far longer than it should.

Lovely location. Rooms comfortable. Fantastic breakfast. We had dinner in the Mansion House which was nice and the staff were all very helpful and friendly. As a resort hotel, the bar prices were on the high side, but that was to be expected.

My overall experience was ok. The course itself was in a great condition. The amount of golfers they allowed on the course was too much in my opinion. It felt very over crowded at times, which then meant there was a lot of waiting between shots. unfortunately we were held up with a lot of drunk players taking their time between shots. This angered our group and put a downer on our whole experience.

Lovely course, some greens hadn’t fully recovered from maintenance but not big problem. Some good challenging holes and good variety around course. Pro shop staff very helpful and good driving range area and plenty of buggies!!

Poor

On both days we were behind a woman society meaning both rounds of golf took at between 5.5 and 6 hours to complete! On the first day, we were immediately behind them, playing as a two ball. We were not offered to play though, to help speed up the play, when they came up to us they were surprised we were put behind them. On the second day, the same group of ladies went out an hour before us but yet again pace of play was awful. By the 6th hole, the pace of play had come to a halt again, meaning we were waiting on the tee boxes for 15/20 minutes a time to start the hole. Despite the pace of play, the fairways were completely scorched, the greens on numerous holes had been aerated and not been cut since. The tee boxes looked like a mess, the divots weren’t filled in and the were no tee bins, meaning the boxes were littered with tees. Overall, not an enjoyable golf weekend

Summer maintenance work on the greens was being carried out, which has to be done... This did not detract from the golf experience. The course is tough and challenging... as golf should be. Golf shop staff were very helpful and I would definitely recommend it a visit.

Challenging course, lots of large bunkers and some water to contend with. For the amount of footfall it must get it was in a decent condition. We had three ladies in our group who played together in the first group and unfortunately were behind a four ball in two buggies who had no idea about any golf etiquette. Driving backwards and forwards, shouting and drinking large quantities of alcohol. At one point in the round they became quite abusive to our ladies three ball. We informed the pro shop by phone and someone did come out to talk to them and move them on. My sense is when you have a value for money setup like Wokefield it has the potential to attract people who prefer a more social / party round of golf.
