Pestana Vila Sol sits around 25 minutes from Faro Airport, right in the Algarve sweet spot for golf trips that want sunshine, convenience and plenty to do after the round. The course is made up of three nine-hole loops that run through fig and almond groves, and it's got pedigree too, Vila Sol hosted the Portuguese Open in 1992 and 1993.

On site you've got championship golf on the doorstep, plus the sort of facilities that make a long weekend easy: three outdoor pools, The Vila Sol SPA and Green Pines restaurant. It works particularly well for groups because you can keep everything under one roof and still have Vilamoura within easy reach when you fancy a change of scene.

Golf-wise, the loops can be paired to create different 18-hole combinations, with Prime and Challenge forming the original championship routing. Prime asks you to drive it straight, miss the fairway and you'll be scrambling, while Challenge saves its sting for the greens, where staying below the hole is the name of the game. Prestige is shorter but still demands accuracy and a bit of thinking.

If you want to mix in other Algarve headline acts, you're less than 15 minutes from the Old Course Vilamoura and The Els Club Vilamoura. You can also browse more options in our guide to Portugal's best golf resorts.

Who is this for? Groups and couples who want an easy Algarve base with on-site golf, a spa and Vilamoura Marina close enough for a post-round wander.

Who is it best for? Golfers who enjoy shaping tee shots and managing risk, Prime and Challenge will reward a tidy game, while Prestige is a smart, strategic nine that's great as a warm-up or add-on.

Golf Courses at Pestana Vila Sol Golf & Resort

Vila Sol Prime Golf Course

The three loops at Vila Sol can be combined to create different 18-hole tests, with Prime and Challenge forming the original championship routing that hosted the Portuguese Open. Each nine has its own character and defence, so you can mix and match depending on how much golf you're playing and what sort of test you're after.

The Prime loop measures 3,241 metres and is widely considered the toughest nine at Vila Sol. The opening stretch demands accurate, powerful driving through narrow corridors lined with mature trees, and if you miss the fairway here you're looking at a punch-out or a forced lay-up. Strategic placement from the tee matters more than distance, particularly on the early holes where the landing areas tighten and the rough thickens.

The signature 6th is an outstanding par-5 where three quality shots are required to weave through multiple lakes that guard the fairway and green. It's a genuine three-shot hole for most golfers, with water threatening every club in the bag and little margin for error. Get through it in regulation and you've earned your par.

Prime's defences are built around tight driving zones and well-placed hazards rather than length, so course management and accuracy off the tee will score better than trying to overpower the layout. The greens are receptive but protected, meaning you need to hit the right part of the fairway to open up the best angles into the flags.

Vila Sol Challenge Golf Course

The Challenge loop is generally played as the back nine of Vila Sol's championship layout and measures a similar length to Prime, but its main defence is a completely different beast, heavily undulating greens that can turn a routine two-putt into a three or four-jack if you're on the wrong tier. Keeping the ball below the hole is critical here, get above the hole on Challenge and you'll quickly find out why locals talk about the greens more than the tee shots.

The fairways are more generous than Prime, so you can afford to open your shoulders off the tee, but the real test comes on and around the greens. Approach shots need to land in the right quadrant, not just on the putting surface, because a 20-footer across a ridge can be harder than a 40-footer on the same level.

Challenge rewards good iron play and a solid short game, particularly if you miss greens and need to get up and down from tricky lies around the edges. The bunkering is strategic rather than penal, so the main hazard is the green contours themselves, which can reject even well-struck shots if you've misjudged the slope or the wind.

Vila Sol Prestige Golf Course

The Prestige loop is Vila Sol's shortest nine at 3,122 metres, but it's no pushover. Designer Donald Steel worked only five bunkers into the routing, instead using the natural features of the land, narrow fairways and strategic angles to create a demanding test that punishes loose shots just as effectively as sand or water.

The fairways are the tightest of the three loops, so accuracy off the tee is paramount. Length is less important here, a well-placed 3-wood or long iron will often set up a better approach than a driver that finds the trees or rough. Steel's design forces you to think your way around, plotting angles and avoiding trouble rather than simply hitting it as far as you can.

The greens on Prestige are smaller and more subtly contoured than Challenge, but they still demand precise approach play and a good read. The lack of bunkers means you're often chipping from tight lies or longer grass, which can be just as challenging as sand if you're not comfortable with different trajectories and spin rates.

Prestige works well as a warm-up nine or a closing loop after playing Prime and Challenge, offering a slightly different test that rewards control and strategy over power. It's also a good option for higher handicappers who want to experience Vila Sol's design philosophy without the severe penalties of the championship loops.

Vila Sol's golf academy uses the latest tuition technology to deliver lessons and clinics tailored to your specific needs, whether that's fixing a slice, dialling in your wedge distances or rebuilding your short game from scratch. The coaching team can structure sessions around the areas you want to improve, with video analysis and launch monitor data to track progress and make adjustments in real time. There's enough practice space to groove the driver, then spend ten minutes sorting that wedge game you promised yourself you'd fix.

Accommodation at Pestana Vila Sol Golf & Resort

Pestana Vila Sol Golf & Resort is only a short stroll from the course, ideal if you like an unhurried breakfast before heading out. The hotel has 189 rooms and suites arranged around a central hub of public areas, which gives it a sociable, clubby feel that suits couples, friends' trips and golf societies.

Rooms are bright and modern in style, with views over lakes, gardens or fairways depending on where you land. There's enough space for golf gear and the usual 5-star comforts you'd expect for winding down after 18 holes.

Facilities are one of Vila Sol's big wins. There are three outdoor pools for downtime, plus a jacuzzi, sauna and steam room for a bit of post-round recovery. If your group isn't all golf, you've also got three tennis courts and a kids' club, so everyone's got something to do while you're chasing a score.

The Vila Sol SPA is worth a look if you're building a proper resort break rather than a pure golf dash. Treatments range from classic relaxation options through to more sports-focused massages, handy if you've got back-to-back rounds booked.

For food, Green Pines Restaurant covers international favourites with a local touch, and it's an easy spot for a relaxed dinner without leaving the resort. If you do want more nightlife, Vilamoura Marina is close enough to dip in and out without turning the evening into a logistical mission.

Nice Hotel friendly staff. The chalet room was noisy presumably from the AirCon unit next to the room. Could do with a few more lights on the walkways to the chalet rooms at night! A little dark for an older person as the walkway sets were very uneven and could easily trip up! The buffet food in the Hotel restaurant was good but the even menu was limited and food was average. Too salty and vegetables limited. The buffet evening meals have been good in the past but the last 4 visits the buffet was not available in the evening.

Hi for golf only at Vila sol ok Our room in the chalet was in darkness all the time we had to pull sun beds from the pool area to our front door! We paid 45euro each for the Christmas dinner which they have on Christmas Eve and again this was very disappointing, we expected to be served a three course meal for that price but no, same as other evening meals, serve yourself and not very hot at that! Breakfasts were just ok the guy making the ommellettes took about 5 minutes for each one nothing to do with a queue just he was useless Staff were quite good and bar staff helpful Certainly nowhere near a five star hotel and I have stayed in hotels all over the world! Overall we quite enjoyed the stay because of the weather Unfortunately I was not aware of how far away the other golf courses were, nearly an hours drive each day! In fact we gave up the last venue Silves and changed to play again the Vila sol course on the Monday horrendous... we were of course a two ball sqeezed in beyeeen four balls especially the group in front despite my protestations looking for lost ball for about 10 minutes refused to let us through. Fortunately our day at Gramacjo was great as we met and played with a lovely couple from Germany Alto was ok but the rough was so long difficult to find a ball just off fairway However all transfers were spot on.

It was a very nice hotel with excellent facilities and a very helpful and co-operative staff.

Most of the staff very friendly, breakfast ok, Recommend the continental as it is far better than the hot buffet! Rooms a little bit dated and a bit of walk from main hotel but not a problem as we had huge lockers for our golf kit by the reception area. The hotel is situated is quite far from the other golf courses, some at least 40 minutes drive. Seems that the other courses are close together and villa sol hotel situated a little out of the the way on its own. Overall the hotel was nice. We didn’t try the pool as we stayed in November for the golf.

We booked only the day before travel. Organisation, attention to detail (including most cost effective transfer to and from Airport) excellent. Our grateful thanks to Steve Smith at 'Your golf travel'. Whilst hotel was a bit dated, facilities, service and buffet breakfasts excellent.

We played 19-27 and 1-9 and hardly had a delay. Course is tree-lined and has a very English feel to it so errant shots are punished. We were going straight to the airport after our round and were very happy to find showers and towels available for all.

Vila Sol is a great test of golf off the white Tees but only players who drive the ball 250 - 300 yards should play off the back. The yellow tees give normal single figure players an opportunity to play mid and short irons to greens. The greens were in excellent condition but the fairways appear compacted and a lot of work is required to bring them back to a good condition. Many fairways were bald and muddy with little growth despite warm temperatures and reasonable rainfall. 3 great 9's however and always enjoy the challenge! John

We found the course in excellent condition, very busy but well managed so we were not held up ( other than by some idiots playing 2 balls each! )so not the course staffs fault. As a very average golfer I found some holes challenging but great fun. Plenty of water which was not always avoided ! I haves described the course as hard but to a better golfer probably average in difficulty.

Course appears overplayed. Multiple bare patches on the fairways and almost 6 hours for a round of golf. A lack of course Marshall meant a few groups who lacked ability and etiquette held the field up.

The courses had an attractive and interesting range of holes over thee nine hole arrangements. We enjoyed all the three different nines with the only criticism being the fairways which were somewhat worn. We would certainly go back to this venue.

Even though the course looked very busy we were started on the 19th hole (not the bar!!) and we had an amazing round. No hold ups even though we were only a 2 ball. Nice course, fairly flat and easily played with a pull trolley. Good condition considering so much rain in the few days before and on the morning we played. Would recommend.

Lots of noise, building/construction work going on around the course. Cranes and builders making noises too. Didn’t have the same feel to it as the other courses we played on although was very nice I wouldn’t rate it as good as Gramacho or Pinta. We played it on a rainy day and a sunny day and got to experience it in both conditions.
