Trevose Golf & Country Club

9.6
Excellent See all 8 reviews

Trevose Golf & Country Club sits on Cornwall's north coast, right above Constantine Bay, and I'll be honest, the views can be as distracting as they are inspiring. It's one of the South West's best all-round golf bases, with 36 holes on site, proper links conditions and enough off-course kit to keep everyone happy between rounds.

The main draw is the Championship Course, a firm, windswept links that runs out towards Trevose Head and back. If the breeze is up (and it often is), you'll need to keep the ball down, pick sensible lines and accept that par is a very good score on a few holes. The two nine-hole loops give you options for a shorter hit, a warm-up round or a second game on the same day without repeating yourself.

What I like about Trevose is how easy it is for travelling golfers. It feels like a real club rather than a members-only fortress, so groups can just get on with the important stuff: good golf, a decent post-round pint and a comfortable bed within a few minutes' walk. And if you fancy a change of scene, Padstow is only three miles away, home to Rick Stein's collection of restaurants, brasseries and cafés.

Who is this for? Golfers who want authentic Cornwall links golf with on-site accommodation and plenty to do off the course.

Who is it best for? Societies and groups planning multi-round weekends, couples who like a golf-first break with leisure options and anyone after a top links test without the stuffy vibe.

Championship Course

Trevose's championship golf course was opened in 1924, and was designed by the esteemed Harry Colt, whose outstanding pedigree is a result of his work at Augusta, Wentworth, Pine Valley, Sunningdale, Muirfield and Royal Portrush, a list that should help to underline the quality at Trevose. The remarkable beauty of the Cornish coast is the backdrop for Colt's 6,863 yard classic, which is comprised of two loops; the outward half hugs the rugged seaside, before you turn for home and play the inward links of the closing stretch. Golfers will battle the elements that batter this exposed landscape, where the smooth and pure putting surfaces are protected by treacherous pot bunkers and severe rough.

Headland Course

The Headland Course is a charming little nine-holer that was laid out by the legendary Peter Alliss in 1993, and offers good variety during a stay at Trevose. The loop works its way out to the 5th tee at the point of the headland, from which the views towards St.Ives are incredible. The greens on the Headland rival the quality of the Championship Course.

Short Course

Trevose's Short Course is a beautiful little nine-hole course that is ideal for beginners, juniors, or golfers looking for some light relief from the rigours of the Championship layout. Visitors are sure to enjoy the views out to sea as the course winds its way around the ancient Chapel of St. Constantine.

Trevose has an outstanding practice ground, where you can hone your skills or enlist the advice of the resident PGA professionals.

Accommodation at Trevose Golf & Country Club

Trevose can host up to 120 golfers on site, so it's a strong shout for societies, larger groups and families who want to stay together without relying on taxis. Options range from high-end self-catering to simpler golfer-friendly rooms.

The Treheul Apartments are the premium pick, set above the course with big Atlantic views. They're spacious and contemporary, with soundproofing, double glazing and well-equipped kitchens, ideal if your group likes the flexibility of cooking in and keeping things relaxed after a windy day on the links.

If you want to be close to the action, the five bungalows sit around 50 yards from the clubhouse. Each sleeps five and has an open-plan living space for cards, matchplay analysis and the usual post-round debate, plus a private garden for morning coffee or evening drinks.

The seven chalets by the 18th green suit families particularly well thanks to their location near the pool and courts. They've also had recent work to improve the living space, making them a more comfortable base for a longer stay. For something with a bit of history, Fairway Cottage (the original clubhouse) sleeps six and overlooks the course, a great option for groups who want a bit more character.

For golfers who just want a clean, comfortable base, the Dormy Flats overlook the pool and 18th green and keep things simple, a practical choice without the self-catering commitment of the apartments.

Off the course, you've got three hard tennis courts, two Padel courts and an outdoor pool that comes into its own in summer. The Planet Beauty Salon offers a full menu of treatments, from massages to bridal packages, ideal for those who want to unwind after a tough round. The clubhouse restaurant seats 130 with views towards Trevose Head, and the menu is straightforward with generous portions, particularly good at sunset.
