The PGA Sultan Golf Course at Antalya Golf Club is widely seen as one of Belek's standout championship tests, and it's easy to see why golfers keep coming back. As one of the area's older, more established layouts, it helped shape what Belek golf looks like today: corridors of pine, sandy ground underfoot and water in play often enough to keep you honest.

One of the big selling points is how straightforward the golf holiday logistics are. The course sits right next to The Sirene Belek Golf Hotel, so if you're staying there you can swap the transfer bus for a short walk and get preferred access to both the Sultan and the sister course, the Pasha. If your group wants maximum golf time with minimum faff, this is exactly the sort of set-up that works.

The Sultan also comes with proper tournament credentials. In 2012 it hosted the Eisenhower Trophy, with names like Justin Thomas, Cameron Smith and Hideki Matsuyama all in the field. Later that year the Turkish Airlines World Golf Final arrived in Belek, with eight of the world's best teeing it up. Justin Rose took the $1.5 million first prize, beating Lee Westwood in the final and Tiger Woods in the semi-final, with Rory McIlroy also in the line-up. Not bad company for your holiday scorecard.

Who is this for?

Golfers who want a proper championship round in Belek, with tour history, pine-lined fairways and water that makes you pick your spots.

Who is it best for?

Low to mid handicappers, and confident higher handicappers, who enjoy plotting their way round and don't mind a few nervy shots when the water starts squeezing the landing areas.

From the championship tees, the Sultan stretches to 7,011 yards and it'll still ask serious questions of a single-figure handicap. This is a course designed with the better golfer in mind, constantly asking you to weigh risk against reward as you navigate tight corridors of pine, strategic water hazards and well-protected greens.

The routing makes full use of the landscape's natural drama. Holes wind through towering pine forests, with the Taurus mountains providing a spectacular backdrop throughout your round. Water comes into play frequently, whether it's the streams that meander across fairways or the larger lakes that guard greens and squeeze landing areas.

The finishing hole is a standout, a 444-yard par-4 that demands precision from tee to green. Your drive must find a narrow ribbon of fairway squeezed between two large water hazards, then you're left with a mid to long iron into a green that offers little margin for error. The view of the Taurus mountains as you walk up the 18th creates a fitting atmosphere for the closing stretch, though it's worth staying focused rather than getting distracted by the scenery.

Playing the Sultan gives you a genuine sense of what it takes to compete at the highest level. Justin Rose won here in 2012, beating Lee Westwood in the final and Tiger Woods in the semi-final of the Turkish Airlines World Golf Final. You're walking the same fairways, facing the same challenges and, if you're honest, probably making a few more bogeys than they did. But that's part of the appeal.

Spectacular views, strategic hazards and a layout that rewards good decisions as much as good ball-striking make the PGA Sultan one of Belek's finest courses. If you're building a Belek break, this is one to include.

Played from the back tees the course was pretty long, particularly the par threes, with three well over 200 yds. It was a fair test, with some pretty wide fairways, and well positioned hazards, but enough challenge to make it interesting. Playing in August, the greens had been aerated a week or so prior, so were playing quite slow (maybe touching 8 stimp) with a lot of grain, although rolling pretty well, considering. I played on my own at 8.30am and there were only two other groups on the course, both of which let me through immediately, so pace of play was fast and I finished in around 2hrs 15 minutes. The clubhouse had a bit of renovation going on ahead of the season opening on 1st September, but was in good condition, with excellent changing facilities and a welcoming bar. The staff were very engaging and I was given a complimentary coffee before play. Bar menu was on the expensive side, but not extortionate, and the manager was happy for me to bring my family (with young children) for lunch. Value for money was good - green fee through YGT was around €60 and there was a summer deal on for a cart for €10. Overall an excellent experience, and I will be back on future trips.

This is a fantastic course! There’s water EVERYWHERE and it’s quite long for most average players so it’s a real test of golf...and your nerve!

I’d advise buying a course planner for the Sultan as there are no hole maps on the tees. Each hole is well secluded so even when the course is full it seems like you are playing all on your own...millionaire’s golf!

The condition of the course was immaculate and very well-tended although again we had full scarifying (on the 10th) while we were playing – maybe they do it at most courses this time of year?!

Relish the experience as this is arguably one of the finest golf courses and tests of golf I have experienced in some time (handicap=6).

We hired buggies (€30) and would suggest it’s advisable for all but the hardiest/maddest souls!
