Golf Courses at Sandford Springs Golf Club

Sandford Springs Golf Club

Sandford Springs Golf Club makes great use of its enviable location to offer a trio of superb 9-hole courses – The Park, The Wood and The Lakes – all are distinctly different and provide great enjoyment.

Located between Basingstoke and Newbury, the course was laid out by Hawtree & Son (founder members of the British Institute of Golf Course Architects). The original 18-hole were officially opened by Sir Nick Faldo and Bernard Gallagher OBE in 1989, the final 9-holes were finished in the summer of 1991.

The signature hole is the 9th hole on The Park Course – a short downhill par-4 which requires an accurate long iron from the tee followed by a good approach to a putting surface which is guarded by two lakes. However it is possible for the long hitters to carry the 270 yards over water!

The Woods Course

With its mature trees creating a naturally scuplted challenge, accuracy is required to negotiate the avenues of The Woods, arguably the most difficult of Sandford Springs' three nines.

The Park Course

Strategy, placement and ball-striking are all examined fully on the Park, which, upon climbing to its highest levels, is commonly buffeted by strong prevailing winds that help make it more of a links test.

The Lakes Course

The water is everywhere at The Lakes! The opening four holes provide a tough start to any round - be it your initial induction or when commencing the back nine.

Great venue, well looked after, the long wet season meant the courses were a bit boggy in places but playable, greens had not suffered. Overall not a bad weekend at all.

Three excellent 9 holes courses. Hotel comfortable and food a good standard. Another great trip arranged by YGT

Excellent service, superb staff and very good rooms, the only negative point being the width of the single beds (narrow for most reasonably built men). The breakfast was very good and the evening meals, whilst very well presented, were very limited in choice but overall, my group was very impressed.

Clean large comfortable rooms. Hotel would have scored five stars if after golf facilities were more available. Only one small snooker/pool table to entertain our group throughout the evenings. Swimming pool would be a great investment for this venue.

The hotel upgraded me and my room mate to a suite - always the best way to treat the organiser! This was luxurious, and feedback from others in our group was also very good. Very pleasant bar area with good value food.

Rooms, service and quality of food excellent. However I didn't pick up in the small print only a 2 course meal. Had to have starter & main and pay extra £5 for a dessert. Also the restaurant was at the clubhouse. Fine if a dry evening, not so good if cold and raining.

The hotel is ideal for a short golf break. The rooms were large, well appointed and very smart - no bath but the shower was excellent. There is a small gym but no other facilities. The evening meal was super and extremely well organised with no one having to wait very long for their meal and the quality of the food and snacks was excellent.

This was an absolute pleasure, beautifully appointed rooms, clean& tidy with a fantastic bed and shower room. We all slept very well here. The food was great, service good and value for money. Drinks were reasonably priced too. The sympathetic new architecture perfectly compliments the existing old clock house building creating a great vista. The overall feeling was very relaxing.

This was my fourth visit to Sandford Springs, this time with a party of forty. I was very nervous of keeping that many happy. Not a problem. No one could fine ant faults to speak of. Food, rooms, staff were all rated very highly. The courses,3x9holes, were also highly recommended by both low and high handicappers. One gentlemen said he go as far as to say it was his most enjoyable holiday ever!

Apart from the weather on the final day, which is obviously out of everyone's control, our trip to Sanford Springs was a great success.

Our group consists of a wide range of handicaps, from single figures to mid twenties, but all were catered for with three 9 hole loops, each with different characteristics. The condition of all three courses was excellent, with undulating fairways and greens to test any level of golfer.

The staff throughout the complex were very welcoming and helpful, providing polite and quality service during our stay.

The only thing lacking was thelack of additional leisure facilities, such as swimming pool, sauna and in the bar area, pool/snooker table etc...

The hotel was exceptionally clean and the rooms were very well equipped. The food was excellent too, with a varied choice for both the evening meal and the breakfast.

Overall the consensus of the whole group was that this is a great venue and one we would all happily return to at some point in the future.

Finally, I would like to thank you and YGT for the professional approach to helping people like myself in organising golf trips for groups of varying abilities and making the experience as easy as possible.

We played three rounds at the end of the wettest October known but were lucky enough to have selected three dry (but cold) days! The biggest problem for us was the amount of leaves on the first and second cut, which made finding balls quite frequently very difficult but we fully appreciated that 'leaves' can always be a nuisance this time of year. However, the ground-staff's use of a blower could have made things better, but there was no evidence of use. The greens were good, giving respect to previous weather conditions - the course consisting mainly of very long par four's which played impossibly long. The 'Park' nine attracted some criticism for being wide, somewhat bland and generally unexciting to play but overall and with due allowance for the time of year, it was an agreeable experience to play.

Despite the amount of rain in previous days, indeed weeks, the course was in superb condition and a credit to the ground staff. We were lucky to have 3 mostly dry days.

Beautiful laid out three nine courses, the Parks, Woods and Lakes. We found the Parks the easier of the three nines, and the Woods the hardest, not as much water on the Lakes as we thought there would be. Greens on all three courses were superb, ultra fast and true. Fairways and tees also excellect. All my group would definitely go back to Sandford Springs to play, as we all thought this was one of the best courses we have played.

With 3 different start points you don't get stuck behind others for long, and vice versa. Some tricky holes but course isn't massively long. Greens in excellent condition.

being 3 nine holes there were some hold ups going from 9 to 10 but on the whole the staff did their best to keep things moving. we thought the greens were good and fast but could use some extra water in the current weather.

The courses are well kept = lovely greens, if a bit fast, and beautiful flowers around the tees. Lovely wide fairways but some well placed bunkers. Well organised with a starter to see you all off and a halfway house. Will definitely return.

3 excellent 9 holes. The Park was the easiest with a wonderful finishing hole. The Lakes didn't have as much water as the name suggests, but a couple of par 3s over water. The Woods was the most challenging. Hilly and undulating. Overall the courses were in excellent condition.

To clarify above remarks we were playing in four balls and all combinations of the 27 holes were completed in under 4 hours. The organisation of linking the 3 nines was superb. Not overly long and nicely undulating without being too hilly we had a very enjoyable 3 days. We will be back.

We arrived on Friday, staff very good organised and pleasant. Played in the afternoon ,had a bit of rain but the course handled it well. On the Saturday round the course was over subscribed with the tee booked all morning. Tee at 12:15 We packed up after nine holes as it took 3 hours , lots of lost ball searching in matches in front of us, at that rate we wouldn't have finished till after six! and we had homes to go to.

The woods and the lakes are good but the park course is a bit boring. this course is priced at the top end and i didn't think it was worth it. if it was priced in the middle it would be allowed

In good weather we would have given this a 5 but due to the hot summer many fairways were pretty rough with burnt grass/no grass. We arrived after 2 days of torrential rain including our 1st day. However the pro-shop staff were very accommodating and managed to put our Tee time forward so It was not pouring down by the later time. No buggies day 1 but by day 2 the course had drained well. A great combination of 3 x 9 hole layouts, our favourite was the "Woods" followed by the "Parks" courses. But play all 3 if you have time. Overall a great find and we've unanbimously voted to return next year!
