San Roque Club, Old Course

San Roque Old Course is one of Sotogrande's proper tests, the kind of place that doesn't hand out pars for fun. It's also got a serious CV, having hosted European Tour Qualifying School and the Spanish Open, so you know the layout stands up when good players turn up.

Dave Thomas' design runs through rolling ground framed by mature cork trees, and it feels refreshingly natural compared with some of the newer resort builds along the Costa del Sol. Off the tee you'll find fairways that are fair, but don't get too comfortable. The real work starts on your approaches. The greens are smaller than many in the area and the bunkering is exactly where you don't want it, especially if you're coming in from the wrong angle.

The key here is course management. If you're hitting driver on autopilot, you'll be reaching for the sand wedge (and not in the good way). Pick smart targets, keep the ball in play and you'll give yourself plenty of chances.

Standout hole: the 17th is the one most people talk about, a tempting par 5 that threads through cork trees before rising to an elevated green guarded by bunkers. It's reachable in two on paper, but I'd only have a proper go if the lie and wind are both on your side. Get it right and you'll walk off with a birdie and a story. Get it wrong and you'll be scrambling to save par.

Want to include San Roque Old Course on your next Costa del Sol golf break? We can build it into a Sotogrande-based trip with guaranteed tee times and the right hotel for your group.

Who is this for? Golfers who want to play a course with genuine European Tour heritage in one of Spain's most prestigious golfing regions.

Who is it best for? Mid-to-low handicappers who value strategy over length and appreciate a layout that makes you think your way around rather than simply bombing driver on every hole. Confident mid-handicappers who enjoy a challenge will also get plenty out of the round.

San Roque Club, Old Course

San Roque's Old Course was officially unveiled in 1990, and was designed by the legendary Dave Thomas, the man responsible for so many terrific projects at home and abroad. Following revision work on the bunkering by Seve Ballesteros, the Old Course hosted the European Tour's finest professionals for the 2005 Spanish Open.

The course is an exacting proposition, whose tight, sloping fairways wind through the cork trees that make the estate so famous, affording incredible views of the surrounding mountains. The inward half is the more spectacular, traversing the rolling hills and demanding brave carries over the cavernous gullies. The closing holes take in the shimmering lakes at the centre of the resort, presenting a finish as beautiful as it is challenging.

With an internationally renowned golf academy and two of the region's finest championship course, visiting the San Roque Club is an essential component of any good golfing holiday in Southern Spain.

They are doing a lot of building work around the clubhouse and first couple of holes which left us concerned that this course might be a bit of a let down. However once we got away from the building works it was well up to the standard of the other 3 courses. Again great use of terrain.

Lovely, traditional course you can walk or buggy. Difficult to fault, exactly what quality holiday golf should be.

The best course we played all week. Teeing areas well maintained and course well manicured. Easy walking course. Good views , well defined penalty areas and smooth greens. Should hurry to play this course as it will be members only soon. I would return to play this course. The difference in condition between this course and the New course is bizarre unless you consider that members do not play it and therefore it gets less attention. Lots of members only areas within the bar, restaurant and patio facilities. Good practice facilities.

We got the impression that it was very much a members course, with visitors tolerated rather encouraged and welcomed. We played later in the day and the greens were a little ‘scratchy’
