San Roque Golf & Resort

San Roque Golf Resort sits in the foothills of the Sierra Bermeja, just a few minutes from Sotogrande and right in the heart of Costa del Sol golfing country. Right, I'll be honest: the New Course is the sort of track that looks welcoming from the tee, then quietly asks you to prove it.

What to expect on the New Course

Fairways are on the generous side, but there are 100+ bunkers in play and the greens are small, sloping and often quicker than you'd like. There are some cracking elevated tee shots with views across the valley, although the breeze can get up, so you'll want to pick your clubs carefully and be happy shaping a few different flights.

Opened in 2003, San Roque New didn't take long to earn Top 100 recognition in Europe, and it has hosted the Spanish Open in 2006 as well as European Tour Qualifying School. That's a decent clue to the standard you're in for. It's not all about length either. Plot your way around, keep it in position and you'll have chances, especially if you're confident reading tricky breaks on the greens.

Perfect base for a Sotogrande golf week

You're a short drive from Valderrama, Real Club de Sotogrande, La Reserva and Almenara, so it's easy to build a multi-course trip without living in a hire car. It's also a strong pick for golfers visiting Sotogrande who want a genuine championship test in a relaxed setting.

Who is this for? Golfers who want a proper Sotogrande-area test with Tour-level pedigree, but without the buttoned-up feel.

Who is it best for? Mid to low handicappers and confident ball-strikers who enjoy plotting their way round and don't mind fast, sloping greens.

San Roque Golf & Resort

In 2003 the San Roque Golf & Resort welcomed its a championship layout designed and constructed by the esteemed American architect, Perry Dye. The course measures a colossal 7,246 yards from the tips, and although it differs greatly in style to its neighbour, it presents an equally formidable challenge.

With unparalleled views over the Guadalquiton River and the amazing azure of the Mediterranean, the New is an unforgettable experience, and was rewarded with the 2006 Spanish Open. More than 100 strategically positioned bunkers guard the impeccable fairways and greens, and while the cork tree-lined targets are more forgiving than the Old, visiting golfers will require sound strategy and course management to score well.

With an internationally renowned golf academy and two of the region's finest championship course, visiting the San Roque Golf & Resort is an essential component of any good golfing holiday in Southern Spain.
