Quinta da Ria

Quinta da Ria sits inside the protected Ria Formosa Natural Park on the eastern Algarve, so you're never far from lagoons, salt marshes and that big coastal sky. Designed by Rocky Roquemore (the same man behind sister course Quinta de Cima), it's a resort course that feels properly tied into its surroundings rather than dropped on top of them.

The front nine threads through umbrella pines and cork oaks, with generous fairways that still ask you to pick a side if you want the best angle in. Turn for home and it opens up towards the shoreline, with water and breeze becoming more of a factor as you get closer to the estuary. When the wind is up, club selection on approaches can be a proper talking point.

If you like a hole you'll remember on the flight home, the par-3 17th is the one, a carry across water to a green framed by dunes and marshland. It's the kind of shot that stays with you.

Condition tends to be very strong, with greens that typically roll true and rough that's penal without being silly. It's enjoyable for mid-handicappers who like plotting their way round, but higher handicaps will still have plenty of fun if they play within themselves and soak up the scenery.

If you're in the area, it pairs brilliantly with Quinta de Cima for a Roquemore one-two.

Who is this for? Golfers who want scenic Algarve golf in a protected coastal setting, with enough strategy to keep you interested.

Who is it best for? Mid-handicappers and mixed-ability groups pairing Quinta da Ria with Quinta de Cima for two contrasting rounds.

Quinta da Ria

With the sea on one side, and the mountains towering on the other, Quinta da Ria's setting is awesome, and the golf course lives up to its billing too. The 6,579 yard layout is built around the five man-made lakes that are the focal point of the landscape, which also provide the course's irrigation.

More than 300 trees have been planted around the course, and there is a restriction on construction, ensuring that the integrity of the environment remains intact. The signature holes are undoubtedly the 16th and 17th, which are carved through the lakes, and can either make or break your round.

These outstanding holes and the stunning surroundings help to explain why Quinta da Ria has become a mainstay of a golf holiday around the Eastern area of the sunny Algarve.

The course is a good test of golf and tested our group , it is a bit disappointing to get onto the 10th tee to find that a 4 ball cut in. When asked how they managed that they said that the after 9 holes they fancied something to eat !! This obviously made our round. A lot longer than we hoped.

Disappointing that the greens had been hollow tined a few days before. Someone should have informed us when we were booking that this may be the case.

A terrific layout with some great views. A very fair course with some tough holes and some real birdie chances. Easily walkable course which is just as well as no buggies were available.Greens in good condition and lunch at the clubhouse was excellent.
