Quinta da Marinha Resort

Just 30 minutes from Lisbon and 10 minutes from Cascais, Quinta da Marinha Resort sits on Portugal's west coast between the Atlantic and the Sintra Mountains. The main draw is Robert Trent Jones Sr.'s layout, a proper strategic test where positioning matters as much as power. It has hosted professional events over the years and sits right next door to Oitavos Dunes, which is why this pocket of Cascais works so well for a short Lisbon golf tour.

The resort balances quality with accessibility. You're close enough to Cascais to enjoy the town's restaurants and nightlife, yet far enough to wake up to mountain views and fairway silence. Accommodation splits between a five-star hotel and private villas, both designed with golfers in mind. Rooms open onto balconies that frame the course and the ridgeline beyond, while the villas offer space and privacy for groups who want their own rhythm between rounds.

If you want championship golf without being stuck miles from civilisation, this place hits the sweet spot: beachy coastal feel, quick transfers, and plenty to do after your round. Include Quinta da Marinha on your next Lisbon golf break if you want top-class golf with an easy, sun-soaked base.

Who is this for? Golfers seeking a refined base near Lisbon with access to championship golf and coastal charm, ideal for 2-4 night breaks combining quality golf with Cascais culture.

Who is it best for? Mid-to-low handicappers who appreciate strategic course design, groups wanting villa privacy, and couples pairing golf with restaurants and nightlife in Cascais.

Quinta Da Marinha Resort

The course has recently been used for a PGA Challenge Tour event, and despite its youth is a fantastic mature test. Set against the astounding backdrop of the Atlantic Coast, the course measures 6,419 yards from the championship tees, and is a terrific test for every player, be it the professionals or the average golfer.

The par-71 layout is undoubtedly a hidden gem of Europe, where you can enjoy an outstanding round of golf while you gaze over the rugged Atlantic coastline that makes Portugal's Western area so special.

Quinta da Marinha is a great place for some tuition, where the resident PGA professionals use the same technology that Tiger Woods utilises to streamline his swing.

In 2007 Quinta da Marinha hosted the best from the Challenge Tour as the venue of the Estoril Challenge de Portugal which was won by Surrey golfer Ross McGowan. McGowan's -12 total, which included a 66 in the final round, was good enough to claim the title and the 20,800 euro first prize.

Signature Hole: Hole 13, Par 4, 334 yards (White Tees), SI 8

While much of Quinta Da Marinha is threaded with beauty, boasting some stunning scenery of the Sintra mountains and the Atlantic Ocean, the 13th deserves a special mention. The luscious fairway rolls down towards the sea, before you are greeted with a green possessing some spectacular panoramic views. This picturesque par 4 is one of the most famous holes of Portuguese golf and it is to no wonder that the hole was used for many years to promote “golf in Portugal”.

Accommodation at Quinta da Marinha Resort

Quinta da Marinha offers two main options: a five-star hotel for easy resort living, or private villas for groups who want more space and their own schedule.

Hotel

The hotel sits right on the course with views towards the Sintra range. Rooms are modern, calm and set up for a golf trip, with air conditioning, satellite TV, in-room safes and balconies looking out over the fairways or mountains. Bathrooms are spacious and well finished, the kind you linger in after a long round rather than rush through. The atmosphere is relaxed and considered, ideal for couples or smaller groups who want hotel service without the stuffiness of a country club.

Villas

If you're travelling as a fourball, society group or with family, the villas are the pick. You'll get extra living space, a kitchenette for simple self-catering and a balcony or terrace for a relaxed post-round wind-down. The villas are finished to the same standard as the hotel, but they offer the kind of autonomy that suits groups who prefer their own schedule. Evening debriefs over a bottle of Portuguese wine feel less forced and more like the natural rhythm of a proper golf trip.

Wellness and downtime

The Health Club keeps things straightforward with an indoor pool, sauna, Turkish bath and gym, plus massage treatments designed to undo the damage of walking 18 holes. For a fuller spa menu, the Ritual Spa offers face and body treatments that lean towards the luxurious end without overdoing it. You can also join guided running tours around the estate if you like to keep moving between rounds, a smart way to loosen up before a morning tee time.

Food and drink

Five Pines anchors the hotel with modern Portuguese cooking, traditional recipes given a contemporary edge in a dining room that feels relaxed rather than formal. Monte Mar focuses on seafood, sourcing locally and serving the kind of grilled fish that tastes better when you're this close to the ocean. Cosi Fan Tutte handles Italian classics, the sort of menu that works equally well for a quick pasta before bed or a longer evening with wine. After your round, the Trent Jones Bar offers a quieter spot to settle in with a drink, named in tribute to the architect who shaped the fairways you've just navigated.

We stayed in the villas which I wouldn’t describe as villas. They were 2 bedroom apartments which were clean and adequate for our stay.the shuttle bus which was always available took us to the hotel for breakfast and the drivers were very friendly and cooperative.drinks and food was expensive which we expected being 5 star hotel plenty of choice at breakfast.

Stayed in villas which were a short minibus ride from main hotel & all facilities. Great accommodation, a little inconvenient if you want to use to the spa or pool & in the morning to go for breakfast.

Very comfortable hotel. Staff super friendly and helpful. We upgraded to a suite in the hotel for convenience rather than stay in one of the villas which are 10-15 mins walk away. Excellent breakfasts. Lots of other guests - golfers and non-golfers, mostly aged 40+ - so the hotel had a very good vibe.

We found Quinta da marinha quite tough as greens were in excellent condition and very fast.fairways were generous and course was a bit untidy in places but overall enjoyable and good value for money.

Not being able to book buggies was a concern although they did scrape enough together for us in the end. Wouldn’t have liked to have to walk it.

Unfortunately we played the course on a very windy day which did not make for enjoyable golf. There are some interesting holes but the course is a little worn, maybe a long summer.
