Praia D'El Rey Resort

The championship seaside links is visually stunning, and tremendously exciting to play thanks to the great variety of holes that the natural landscape provides. The front nine has a distinct parkland accent, as it runs in and out of the pine trees, whilst the back nine is home to some of the best links golf in mainland Europe. The signature holes - 13, 14 and 15 - run along the Atlantic coastline, providing fantastic views of the sea, dunes and back towards the pine forest.

Course architect Cabell Robinson has designed Praia D'El Rey to be the complete golfing challenge, with bold, deep bunkers, undulating greens, and natural rugged sand border areas which contrast sharply with the lush green fairways. The course was recently rated the 7th best in Europe by Golf World magazine, while the International Association of Golf Tour Operators voted Praia D'El Rey the best on the continent.

There is also a Golf Academy on site, with 24 individual driving range bays. The main putting green is one of the biggest in Europe (900m2) and there is a fairway practice bunker adjacent to driving-range bays, all specifically designed to allow you to hone your skills.

Golf Magazine recently rated Praia D'El Rey as the 13th best golf course in continental Europe and it is certainly one of the best courses in Lisbon.

The apartment was good and little issues were sorted out quickly. Shame no food shop or bar in vicinity as off season.

We arrived in the early hours and couldn’t get into the room as they couldn’t find a key. Security eventually opened the door and we got keys in the morning. Praia D’El Rey club house was the best location for food and drinks.

Stayed in the Garden Village, which is about two miles from the Marriott Hotel complex with its bars and restaurants. The first floor apartment was two bedded, with a vast kitchen and two bathrooms. The sitting room had patio doors on two sides one leading to a well furnished terrace. An excellent swimming pool was just below in a well tended garden. So good was the apartment that enquiries were made about the cost of purchase. Although a drive away from the Marriott, our part of the resort had an excellent seafood restaurant cum bar called Maré, that also served a decent breakfast.

Excellent accommodation and setting. Staff incredibly helpful. Only minor quibble is that supermarket shop was closed both Sunday and Monday which meant we did not get any supplies for apartment for 48hours as we arrived Sunday

Accommodation was very good. Had 2 bed apartment on seafront and it was excellent. No facilities nearby though and if weather mixed and a non golfer you would be bored after 2 days.

The estate is very well organised and everyone dealt with we found to be extremely friendly, welcoming and couldn’t do enough. The estate has a very efficient mini bus system to get you anywhere you need to go and operates from 7:00 to midnight

Apartments were nice, breakfasts and food in clubhouse were good enough but service and food in restaurant on last night was not good enough and location was twice as far away from Lisbon and airport than was advertised to us

We stayed at the beachfront, the accommodation was very good although we had no hot water for 2days which wasn't dealt with faster enough by the resort. The bars are massively over priced €11 for a G&T 7€for a beer.

Initially we had to ask to swap from our allocated apartment as all the furniture including bedding was damp. The revised accommodation whilst further from the clubhouse was better situated and much nicer (and drier). We had one poor experience in the clubhouse bar when our order was forgotten and when it arrived the food was not great (think rushed). Otherwise the experience was very good.

We were upgraded from a Garden view to a Beach view two bed villa not the hotel. It was very well appointed and ideal if you want self catering with a fully equiped kitchen. It is a quiet and a short walk to the stunning beaches and overlooking the Praia D'El Rey sea holes. There is an eratic opening hours mini supermarket and fish restaurant, Mare, a short walk away. The restaurant is expensive compared to local places.

This is a review purely about the accommdation we had in the "Village by the garden" apartments. Generally they were fine, although the hot water did not work in one of the two apartments when we arrived (though resolved when we noted it). The location of our apartment within the resort was not ideal as we had to get the shuttle bus everywhere. The shuttle bus was in fact the biggest problem with the resort as it simply wasn't reliable. Biggest issue was when they allowed us to "book" it for the following morning to get to West Cliffs for our 0800 tee times but they simply didn't turn up and clearly hadn't made any record of the booking. Disappointing in that respect.

Golf courses were good and I’d probably rate troia as number 1, then west cliffs and then Praia del Rey. West cliffs has great potential, but needs significant improvements to realise the potential as tee boxes were in terrible condition as well as a lot of the buggy paths/around the edges of the course. If the trait is quiet then it can feel a bit soless, we decided to have supper one night in baleal which is well worth doing. For troia we stayed in central lisbon and I’d strongly advise that as the course has limited options in respect to food and drink, other than nice beaches and beach cafes in nearby comporta at the right time of year. Central Lisbon to troia is 1hr 30mins incl. boat trip from setubal which is worth doing.
