Set in the sun-soaked Alvor region, Penina is one of the Algarve's original golf resorts, a 360-acre estate built around Sir Henry Cotton's famous Championship Course. You're roughly 40 minutes from Faro Airport, so it's an easy long weekend, and once you're in it's a proper all-in-one set-up: 36 holes, five restaurants, two bars, one of the Algarve's largest outdoor pools and a full tennis academy with five ATP courts.

Off the course, there's plenty to keep non-golfers happy, with cycling, archery, a kids' club and seasonal watersports, plus evening entertainment when you fancy swapping spikes for something a bit smarter. It's the sort of place that suits golf societies who want variety on site, but it also works brilliantly for mixed groups where not everyone wants 18 holes every day.

The headline test is the par-73 Championship Course, a flat-looking layout that plays tighter than it appears thanks to mature trees and woodland-lined fairways. Keep it in play and you'll have a great day, start steering it around and it can quickly bite back. Alongside it, the nine-hole Resort Course and nine-hole Academy Course are ideal for a warm-up loop, a twilight knock or sharpening the scoring clubs.

For resort golf breaks in Portugal, Penina remains a classic: sunshine, history and everything you need in one place.

Who is this for? Golfers or groups looking for a classic Algarve resort experience with multiple courses, plenty of non-golf activities and the convenience of having accommodation, dining and leisure all on one estate.

Who is it best for? Mid-to-high handicappers who want a fair but interesting test on the Championship Course, families or mixed groups needing variety beyond golf, and anyone chasing a bit of Portuguese golf history in a relaxed, full-service setting.

Golf Courses at Penina Hotel & Golf Resort

Championship Course

Opened in 1966 and designed by Sir Henry Cotton, Penina's Championship Course was the first golf course built in the Algarve and remains one of the region's most respected layouts. The course has hosted the Portuguese Open eleven times and is a regular stop on the European Seniors Tour, which speaks to its pedigree and year-round conditioning. Originally built on rice paddies, the 6,869-yard par 73 is largely flat but plays much tougher than the yardage suggests, thanks to mature trees and dense woodland lining every fairway. Miss the short grass and you're often blocked out or forced to chip sideways, so accuracy off the tee matters more than distance here.

The fairways are generous enough if you keep it straight, but the tree corridors tighten your margin for error and punish anything offline. Greens are typically well kept and often run true, even outside peak season, so approach shots need to be precise, especially on the longer par fours where you're coming in with mid-irons. The Championship Course rewards strategy and course management over raw power, and it's a layout that improves with repeat play as you learn where to aim and where to avoid. If you're a mid-handicapper who hits it reasonably straight, you'll score well here. If you spray it, the trees will punish you all day.

The standout hole is the par-4 7th, a 339-yard risk-reward test where water cuts across the fairway in the driving zone. Conservative players lay up short of the hazard and accept a longer iron into a small, undulating green, while aggressive hitters can take on the carry and leave themselves a wedge or short iron. Right, here's the thing with the 7th: if you're anything like me, you'll walk off either feeling like a genius or wondering why you didn't just lay up. It's the kind of hole that separates cautious golf from bold golf, and it often decides matches in competition.

Another highlight is the short par-3 13th, often talked about as one of the resort's standout short holes, with water guarding the front of the green and no margin for a miss short. The hole demands a confident strike and the right club, especially when the wind picks up off the coast.

Signature Hole: Hole 7, Par 4, 310 metres (339 yards), SI 16

The 7th combines risk with reward. Many golfers play short of the water that cuts across the fairway, leaving a longer iron into a small, undulating green. Those who take on the driver can find themselves with a much shorter club in, but run the risk of finding water.

Resort Course

The nine-hole par-35 Resort Course sits alongside the Championship Course and offers a shorter, more relaxed test that's ideal for warming up, cooling down or playing a quick evening loop. The course makes full use of a central lake and shares the same tree-lined character as the Championship layout, so you still need to keep it straight to score well. It's a solid option for higher handicappers who want to build confidence before tackling the main course, or for experienced players who want to work on specific parts of their game without committing to a full 18.

The Resort Course also works well for mixed-ability groups where some players want a gentler round, and it's short enough that you can play it twice in an afternoon if you're keen. It's a great shout for your first afternoon if you've travelled that day and want golf without the full Championship demand. Expect the same tree-lined feel, with the lake bringing a couple of proper decision points rather than just scenery. For mixed groups, it's an easy way to keep everyone involved and still finish in time for a relaxed dinner on site. The pace is quick, the atmosphere is low-pressure, and it's walkable for all ages and abilities, which makes it a smart choice when you want golf without the grind.

Academy Course

The nine-hole par-30 Academy Course, previously known as the North Course, features 18 tees and plays as a proper executive layout with multiple lakes and sand hazards. It's more than just a pitch-and-putt, this is a genuine short course that tests your wedge play, bunker skills and putting under pressure. The Academy Course is perfect for beginners finding their feet, juniors learning the game or low-handicappers who want to sharpen their scoring clubs before heading out on the Championship Course.

You can play it in under two hours, which makes it a great option for early mornings or late afternoons when you want to squeeze in extra holes without the commitment of a full round. Don't underestimate it, the lakes and bunkering put a premium on distance control, especially if there's any breeze. It's ideal for beginners, but it also doubles as a sharpener for better players who want to dial in wedges and short irons before taking on the tighter lines of the Championship. The course is well maintained, the greens hold their pace, and it's a proper test of your short game rather than just a warm-up facility. If you're serious about improving your scoring, this is where you'll see the benefit.

Accommodation at Penina Hotel & Golf Resort

Penina's 196 rooms and suites have all been fully renovated and sit across a sprawling estate that blends English architecture with Portuguese warmth and service. Every room comes with flat-screen TV, high-speed internet, automatic minibar, electronic safe and coffee and tea facilities, with views stretching over the mountains, gardens or fairways depending on your room category. The accommodation is comfortable rather than flashy, designed for golfers who want a good night's sleep, a proper shower and easy access to the first tee without unnecessary fuss. Suites offer more space and upgraded views for those travelling as couples or small groups who want a bit more room to spread out.

The resort's five restaurants cover everything from casual poolside bites to formal evening dining. L'Arlecchino serves fine Italian, the Sagres dining room focuses on traditional Portuguese classics, and Le Grill Restaurant offers a more refined à la carte experience for those wanting a proper sit-down meal after a long day on the course. For drinks, Spikes Bar and Henry Cotton's are classic golfer's haunts, the kind of spots where you'll recap your round over a cold beer, while the Monchique Cocktail Bar is a quieter, more elegant option for freshly mixed cocktails in the evening. The variety means you can eat somewhere different every night of a week-long stay without leaving the resort.

Beyond golf, Penina's leisure facilities are genuinely extensive. The tennis academy runs lessons and clinics across five ATP courts, the pool is perfect for cooling off between rounds, and there's a sauna, bicycle rentals, a kids' club, on-site shopping and regular live entertainment. Summer guests can also access watersports, and the beach is a short drive if you want to swap fairways for sand. This breadth of facilities makes Penina a strong choice for family holidays where not everyone is obsessed with golf, or for groups who want options beyond 18 holes every day. The estate is large enough that it never feels crowded, and the mature gardens and tree-lined paths give the whole place a calm, established feel that newer resorts often lack.

Penina is located in Alvor in the Western Algarve, less than an hour's drive from Faro Airport. The transfer is straightforward, and transfers can be added to your package.

The hotel hasn't changed in all the years we have been going there. Some of the furnishings and fittings are looking a bit tired and will need updating soon. However, the staff are brilliant. You meet the same people in reception, in the restaurants and in the golf shop and they are polite, helpful and pleased to see you.

The hotel is a little tired and could do with freshening up. Particularly the bedrooms On saying that my group of golfers (4 in total) would certainly return and most likely will It will be difficult to improve on as both hotel and staff were excellent The food and service was very good and the standard of the food incredible Due to some changes with Tee times we played the championship course 3 times and were all very impressed Yourgolftravel were excellent throughout the booking process and would certainly ( providing they are competitive) use them again The organisation has been first class from start to finish

We’ve been here many times so we’re very familiar with the place and those who have worked in the hotel from many years recognised us right away. You need a car for this hotel as it’s out of the way. It’s great for exploring as the roads are very quiet. When golfing you just head down to the basement clubhouse at the back level where they have your clubs already on the buggy waiting for you. They also store your clubs when you get back so no need to carry them at all. When not eating in the hotel there are plenty restaurants to go to in Alvor about 5- 10 minutes by car or taxi. Around 10 euros down and then after 10 pm it jumps to almost double

Been to Penina many times. Always a great relaxing golf experience with no hassle getting to a course somewhere up to an hour away! The facilities were all in great condition. Alvor village is just 10 minutes by Uber cab where you can enjoy ever improving brilliant fish restaurants and curry houses if you need a reminder of home comforts!

This is a busy course but unfortunately understaffed. A lack of marshals on the course so no one keeping the slow players in check. The course is a nice challenge but you can see by the colour of the water running threw it that it’s not being looked after properly. If your ball goes into a stream it’s gone. The resort course is 9 holes and pretty enjoyable but pretty rough and ready.
