The Oxfordshire Golf Club

Jones vision for the Oxfordshire is a modern parkland course in from the American mould, and the incredible course in its short existence has already featured on the European Tour hosting the Benson & Hedges International, Anderson World Matchplay and the English Ladies Open. Some of the professional game’s most prominent names have graced the course, which remains one of England’s best championship tests.

From the tournament tees The Oxfordshire reaches 7,192 yards, which is more than enough for most golfing mortals, and throughout the layout are dotted some majestic holes. None is more famous than the 17th; this incredible par 5 has been named in Golf Magazine’s top 500 holes in the world, and is typical of the golfing adventure created by Jones.

Signature hole: 17th hole, Par 5 - 588 yards from the white tees.

A straight drive is required on this nerve-racking par-5, 17th hole to avoid the bunker on the right and the water to the left. The lake runs along the entire left edge of the fairway, with the green situated in the distance across the water. The safe but longer option is to play around the lake, while the longer hitters can have a crack at either a second fairway or the green itself in two.

Along with The Grove, The Oxfordshire is at the forefront of modern English championship golf design, with terrific facilities that make it ideal for hosting high profile corporate golf events as well as being the ultimate stop on a golf tour around Oxford.

Went on a golf/spa break. The course was tough but good, could have been due to the very hot weather that weekend. The weekend was excellent.

The hotel was convenient as it is part of the golf club and meant we didn’t have to travel. Check in was fast and the rooms where comfortable however there was no water in the room for a period on the Saturday morning. The food was average but the restaurant was noisy due to a wedding in the function room. Overall it was very average.

The hotel appears to be short staffed, at the end of the round, no one was serving in the bar, but not surprising as hotel and course were quiet the whole 3 days of our stay. Dinner and breakfast were very average for a hotel of this quality. The dining room was lacking any atmosphere or ambience. The staff though are excellent and try very hard to please, especially Ben on reception. Overall, slightly disappointing.

Reception and management staff are very welcoming and helpful. The rooms were good although few of the rooms have a view of the golf course which is disappointing. The Sports Bar downstairs is disappointing as the range/quality of food is variable and the place lacks any views of the course and therefore any atmosphere. The bar upstairs has panoramic views especially from the large terraces and has a nice ambiance albeit the price of £13.50 for G&T is far too expensive for thirsty golfers!! The evening meals were served in the private dining rooms where the food and the service is excellent - wine is a bit OTT price wise but as the package for 2 nights/3 rounds of golf is cheap they have to make their money somewhere!

Charlie The golf was as expected , however the hotel staff, organisation was somewhat lacking, we had two rooms booked, names and cards against rooms all incorrect so all weekend nothing but hassle trying to sign against rooms , refusals to get food or drinks booked against rooms , 1 hour to get food in the spike bar, which was cold when we eventually got, restaurant at night was terrible, only people in the restaurant and the food was cold, one plate inedible , bar closed upstairs for a wedding, only bar available was spike bar, Bar man was lazy and uncooperative , it could be such a good experience, unfortunately not mine , especially when all paid up front. Not a place to re visit . Hope the feedback is helpful Les young

It’s a great course - very playable for all levels (we were scratch, 8, 10 & 19 handicaps) and enjoyable.... A good layout, a great halfway hut (which is passed twice) and some really cool holes. The only slight disappointment were the greens - they weren’t ‘bad’ but they clearly just hadn’t been cut for a few days as were fluffy and a bit bobbly...they looked better than they were. We’d definitely go back at some point.

We went on this trip for the golf and weren’t disappointed as the course was very nice, in good condition with well kept fairways and greens. Would definitely recommend the course.

Nice course with some interesting holes, good challenge. Very open, so wind is the defence. Would not want to play it in the rain.

The course is one of the best in the SE and reminds me of the Faldo designed Chart Hills with many undulating mounds bordering the fairways and a large number of bunkers. The signature 8th offers a challenging drive and approach shot with a huge lake running along the right side of the fairway and in front of the green - ditto the challenging par 5 17th!!Despite the water our group ranging from handicaps 9-39 enjoyed the experience as the course offers sensible "bail-out" routes if you can't carry the water. Inevitably work was being done to the greens and fairways - some of which were patchy but every course has suffered after the drought of 2018!

Love the challenge of the golf course. The fairways were in good condition with plenty of grass, and watered. Greens deceptive, but good and slower than we are used to playing. Speed of play an issue, as we were are 2 ball following a society which took 4 and 3/4 hours. The second day was better as we played earlier. Starter and professional staff very helpful. Love the course.
