The New Course, St Andrews

Bordering the Old, The New Course is regarded by many as the best on the links, with some of the most famous holes in world golf.

After a gentle start, the New has many difficult driving holes, bordered tightly by huge banks of yellow-flowering gorse. Played into the teeth of a strong wind, the par-4 sixth is one of the toughest in St Andrews, while the par-3 ninth which skirts the Eden Estuary is a beast, often requiring a solid 3-wood.

New Course, St Andrews

Visitors should not be fooled by the name - there is little ‘new' about The New Course, having been laid out in 1895 by Old Tom Morris. Superbly established, the layout is a true gem, blending subtle short par-4s with a few extremely demanding holes, both long and short.

The route out and back takes golfers to the edge of the estuary, and with the immense quality of the course, it plays second fiddle to The Old Course only in terms of heritage and should always be included on a St Andrews golf tour itinerary.
