Barcelo Montecastillo Golf 5*

8.8
Very Good See all 109 reviews

Barceló Montecastillo Resort sits in the rolling hills outside Jerez, around 15 minutes from the airport and roughly 15 miles from Spain's Atlantic coast. If you like your golf trips easy from the moment you land, this is a proper no-faff option. At the heart of it all is a Jack Nicklaus-designed championship course that hosted the European Tour's Volvo Masters from 1997 to 2001. Winners here include Darren Clarke, Lee Westwood and Miguel Ángel Jiménez, so you're very much walking in Tour footsteps.

The layout is often compared to Wentworth thanks to its tree-lined, parkland feel and championship framing, but there's a distinctly Andalucian twist with undulating terrain, warm light and big countryside views. Expect fast, true greens with subtle breaks, plus plenty of strategic water, especially late on, so the scorecard can change quickly if you switch off coming home.

Off the course, the five-star Barceló hotel brings the comfort, with a recently refreshed feel, a quality spa and all-inclusive options if your group wants everything sorted upfront. You're also well placed for a day in Cádiz (about 30 minutes away), a sherry tasting in Jerez or even a trip to the famous Jerez motor racing circuit if you're into that sort of thing. In short, it's a serious golf venue that still works brilliantly as a sunshine resort break, which is exactly why it's one of the best golf resorts in southern Spain.

Buggies are mandatory before 11am, which tells you something about the terrain, and the best months are typically spring and autumn when the greens are running quick but the heat isn't quite so fierce. That said, winter golf here is perfectly viable if you're looking to escape the UK cold.

Who is this for? Golfers seeking a championship-standard European Tour venue with five-star accommodation, strong practice facilities and easy access from the UK.

Who is it best for? Mid-to-low handicappers who want to test themselves on a Nicklaus design, groups looking for an all-inclusive resort experience, and anyone combining golf with motorsport, sherry tasting or exploring Andalucia's Atlantic coast.

Montecastillo Golf Resort

Course at a glance

The Jack Nicklaus-designed championship course at Barceló Montecastillo is the centrepiece of the resort and the reason this venue regularly features in 'best in Spain and Europe' conversations. Measuring just over 7,000 yards from the back tees, the par-72 offers multiple teeing options so you can find a length that suits your game and simply enjoy the round. What sets Montecastillo apart is the meticulous conditioning, the course is usually presented in excellent nick, with fast, true greens that feature subtle breaks and reward good putting.

Key defence: greens and water late on

Water comes into play throughout, most notably on the closing three holes where it demands precision and composure right to the finish. Miss your line and the water suddenly looks very big. You need to keep your wits about you right until the end of the round, which is part of what made it such a good Tour venue.

Signature hole: the 16th

The standout hole is the 16th, a classic modern championship par four that curves gently right to favour a fade. Fairway bunkers guard the left, pine and olive trees frame the hole, and a perfectly positioned water hazard awaits any approach shot that drifts offline. It's visually stunning and strategically demanding, the kind of hole that stays in your memory long after you've signed the card.

Practice and warm-up

Practice facilities match the quality of the course. The driving range and short-game area give you everything you need to warm up properly or work on specific parts of your game, particularly important on greens that can run quick in the summer months. The resort also features an expanded pitch-and-putt course, ideal for travelling with children, introducing new golfers to the game, or simply spending a relaxed hour as the sun goes down.

Good to know

Buggies are available and mandatory before 11am. The pro shop is well stocked with quality gear and souvenirs worth taking home. This is a world-renowned venue with a European Tour pedigree, and it lives up to that reputation. If you're looking for a championship test in southern Spain with the Nicklaus stamp of approval, Montecastillo delivers.

Accommodation at Barcelo Montecastillo Golf 5*

The five-star Barceló Montecastillo hotel has built its reputation on outstanding hospitality, elegant Andalucian design and the kind of place where everything's set up for golfers, from easy breakfasts to post-round downtime. The resort offers 124 hotel bedrooms, 41 superior standard rooms, 63 superior golf-view rooms, 15 deluxe rooms, three junior suites and two full suites, plus 20 private villas, all decorated in traditional Andalucian style with air conditioning, satellite television and modern comforts throughout. Service is attentive without being intrusive, and the setting, surrounded by Nicklaus-designed fairways and Jerez countryside, feels both exclusive and welcoming.

If you're travelling as a fourball or a bigger society group, the villas are worth a look for extra space and a bit more privacy between rounds. Hotel-wise, it's a straightforward five-star setup that suits golfers, early breakfast, comfortable rooms, and plenty of places to regroup after 18 holes. The golf-view rooms are popular for obvious reasons, and if you're the sort who likes to watch the sun come up over the fairways with a coffee, they're worth the small upgrade.

El Lagar restaurant showcases the finest local produce alongside Jerez sherry, and the in-house nutrition expert can create bespoke breakfast smoothies tailored to your body's needs, a nice touch if you're serious about playing well or just curious about what superfood might help you make more birdies. After your round, the AKADAMA pool bar is the perfect spot to unwind with a cocktail while you cool off, recounting the day's highlights as the Andalucian sun softens.

The U-Spa is pure indulgence. Recently redecorated, it offers everything from deep-tissue massage to quiet time in the relaxation areas, all delivered by expert therapists who know how to ease the tension from a long day on the course. The spa includes a thermal circuit, sauna and steam room, so you can properly reset before dinner. The adjoining fitness suite is more than enough for a quick mobility session before teeing off, and the equipment is quality without being over the top.

Whether you're here for serious golf or a luxurious break with friends, Barceló Montecastillo delivers an experience that stays with you, and one you'll want to return to. The combination of Tour-standard golf, proper resort facilities and easy logistics makes it a go-to for groups who want everything in one place.

We were put in a two bedroom villa which was fine but the sound carried through the adjoining door to next villa and from villa above so if you had noisy neighbours as we did it wasn’t ideal. I stayed on in Week 2 for a golf comp. and the neighbours were 20 something year old boys who partied till 3 so I with a certain amount of perseverance I got moved to hotel where rooms are really nice. Restaurant shut for refurb and good at adjacent hotel was dire. Many folk had stomach problems. Some staff lovely, a couple were rude and grumpy .

Treated like VIP' s from the minute we arrived. Upgraded to luxury apartment. Exceptional service everywhere we went in the hotel and golf resort. Had an amazing long weekend and cannot wait to go back there again. Only small disappointment was not getting a much earlier tee off time on our last golfing day. That apart I had a wonderful and amazing experience.

5th visit - Bar service indifferent. Restaurants buffet - service just about ok - but attention to detail poor - food etc not topped up. However staff cooking hot food to order - good. Quality of food good, management should go to Belek and see what inclusive means. Potentially could be a super hotel.

J Great trip on the whole thanks. However, bit miffed that on the Monday round we not only had to pay a 20 euro supplement per person to tee off at 10am (which admittedly we knew about but does seem a bit harsh) but also had to take buggies. Ended up having to hand over 164 euro to play our round! (four ball) Comes across as a bit of a scam frankly, and failed to compensate for the reasonable headline price. Also the horrendous din from the motorbikes on the adjacent racetrack, on all three days, rather spoilt what would have been a nice peaceful golf course. My putting is bad enough without having multiple high powered bikes on full throttle rather affecting any attempt at concentration! Golfers probably need to be forewarned! Best wishes ND

They allow beginners on and that is when play is slow as course is not suitable for them. It was also very wet when we were there and the paths between green and tee are treacherous. Loved the course but they should put a max handicap of under 30 on it in my opinion with greens running at 12 it’s a challenge.

5th visit - 1st visit excellent then on 3rd and 4th visit course went through a very poor period - now much improved again. Would recommend course - however buggies too expensive for 1 player. Need a starter on the first tee.
