Signature Collection

Set in the rolling hills of the eastern Algarve, Monte Rei feels like it was designed with golfers in mind first and everything else second. Since opening in 2007, Jack Nicklaus' signature design has built a reputation as one of Europe's standout modern courses, and it's easy to see why once you're on the first tee. It's not a brute, but it does ask you to think. Pick the right lines, favour the right side of the fairway and you'll give yourself plenty of chances. Switch off for a couple of swings and it will politely take shots off you.

Location-wise, you're about three miles inland from Manta Rota Beach and around 45 to 50 minutes from Faro Airport. If you've done the Vilamoura circuit before and fancy something calmer, Monte Rei is a lovely change of pace. It's peaceful, polished and built around the course, with the clubhouse sitting up on the hill like the centrepiece it is.

Off the course you've got smart self-catering options right by the clubhouse, excellent practice facilities and dining that's genuinely a cut above. All in, it's an Algarve golf break that suits golfers who care about course quality and don't need a strip of bars on the doorstep, making it one of the best resorts for golf in Portugal.

Who is this for? Golfers seeking a refined, strategic test in a peaceful Algarve setting away from the resort-town bustle.

Who is it best for? Mid-to-low handicappers who appreciate course design, couples looking for quality dining and golf in one place, and groups who value a quieter base with serious golf credentials.

Monte Rei

The course measures just over 7,200 yards from the championship markers and with a dramatic finishing hole in the 550 yard par-5 18th there is sure to be some excitement when Monte Rei hosts a professional tournament in future years.

Although the course can satisfy the longest hitters it is around the greens where shots will be dropped, the subtle undulations on the putting surfaces as well as numerous runoff areas ensure that only the best struck shot will find the right part of the putting surface.

With this breathtaking golf course complimented perfectly by stunning views Monte Rei is a golf course that is etched on your golfing soul. Monte Rei Golf Resort is one of the finest holiday destinations to emerge in recent years, regularly rated the number one course in Portugal. With an emphasis on service and five-star luxury, those fortunate to visit this luxury resort will have an experience that they won’t forget.

Make sure you pack a camera with you for numerous great golfing pictures, most notably on the 226 yard 11th hole and the 18th where a large lake runs all the way up to the front of the green.

Signature Hole: Hole 18, Par 5, 548 yards, SI 15

The 18th is an outstanding finishing hole. A long, downhill par 5, with a tempting play to go for the green in two, for those not feeling the weariness of the round’s golf. However, this option should be considered by the long hitters only and golfers should take caution of the lake before the green, ready to catch any mis hit approach shots.

Monte Rei is ranked as one of the best courses in Portugal

Accommodation at Monte Rei Resort

Monte Rei's accommodation centres on two distinct options, both designed to keep you close to the course and the clubhouse. The Clubhouse Residences are the newer addition, positioned directly beside the hilltop clubhouse with views over the 18th fairway and out towards the Atlantic. These are modern, self-contained properties with one, two or three bedrooms, each featuring en-suite bathrooms, fully equipped kitchens and private balconies. The Residences share their own heated pool and gymnasium, making them ideal for golfers who want the convenience of resort living with the independence of a private villa. You're right next to the clubhouse, so early tee times are genuinely easy, and if you're the type who likes to grab a coffee and head straight to the range, you'll appreciate the walk being measured in seconds rather than minutes.

A short walk from the clubhouse, the linked villas offer a more traditional Portuguese aesthetic. Each villa contains three bedrooms that can be configured as twins or doubles, all with en-suite bathrooms. The interiors are light, spacious and finished to a high standard, with large open-plan kitchens and lounges that work well for groups or families. Outside, each villa has its own patio, perfect for a quiet coffee before your tee time or a glass of local wine after the round. For groups of six, the linked villas are a simple, sociable set-up with plenty of living space and enough privacy that you're not on top of each other.

Self-catering works well here, but you're still close enough to the clubhouse to make dinner and drinks effortless. The villas are set back slightly from the main hub, so you get a bit more peace and quiet in the evenings, but it's only a couple of minutes on foot if you want to head up for a meal or a nightcap. There's ample parking if you've hired a car, and club storage is straightforward, so you're not lugging your bag back and forth every day.

Both accommodation options are designed with golfers in mind. The layouts are practical, the finishes are smart without being fussy, and everything you need is either on-site or a very short walk away. If you're staying for three or four nights and playing multiple rounds, the convenience of being this close to the course makes a real difference.

Dining at Monte Rei is anchored by Vistas Rui Silvestre, the resort's Michelin-starred restaurant. The dining has had a further lift with Jaime Perez joining the team after time at the Ritz-Carlton Arts Hotel in Spain, with a focus on exceptional local ingredients and refined technique. For something more relaxed, the Monte Rei Grill and Veranda offer al fresco dining with views over the course. The Grill is the go-to for a post-round pint on the terrace, while the Veranda, located by the pool, serves a mix of Mediterranean and international dishes. The clubhouse bar stocks a strong selection of Portuguese wines and local beers, and the Monte Rei Club Sandwich has earned a reputation among Your Golf Travel staff as the best in Portugal.

Beyond the golf, the resort includes a swimming pool, tennis courts and a top-class practice set-up by resort standards. The driving range is complemented by a dedicated short-game area with a large bunker and a lightning-quick putting green, giving you everything you need to dial in your game before heading out.

Monte Rei is located between Tavira and Vila Real de Santo António in the eastern Algarve, approximately 50 minutes by car from Faro Airport.

Excellent well appointed villas which are for couples or families. You have space and luxury to help you rest comfortably between the golf. Best to keep a car because of the location. Having your own transport helps to discover the restaurants in the many towns nearby which is highly recommended.

Fantastic experience

Upon arriving at the course you are treated exceptional well .The staff are very informative and helpful. A very beautiful scenic course with very interesting holes and a lot of bunkers. A free buggy was provided with our green fees which had a in built range finder. Very useful. This was probably best as the greens to the next tee are a very long walk. With the buggy despite it being a long course we played it in well under 4 hours. A must to play ! However a note of warning if you are staying at certain accommodations in Vilamoura free transfers to and from the course are not included in your holiday package. With it being approximately 40 miles from Vilamoura it can be pricey by taxi to get there and back.

£175 for the round incl buggies and clubs and a sleeve of balls is clearly very expensive however the course is simply superb, the clubs very good and we were not chased at all, letting just one single through. We had a pleasant coffee on the balcony then excellent practice facilities then the round which took us 4.5 hours. The tees were a little suffering from divots but ok however the fairways were excellent ditto the greens. The single issue in my mind was the Bermuda fluff around the green fringes. It was way too long and represented a significant penalty. You do two good shots to be just off the putting surface then massively difficult to control out, with a virtually covered ball. Better off in the green side bunker. Overall 9 out of 10. Derek Johnson Parkstone Hcp 7.

Staff when arriving at Monte Rei were brilliant and efficient. Had everything ready and waiting when we arrived. Quick to get us on the Tee off time. Course was a challenge but in great condition and we all loved every minute playing at Monte Rei. Few lads said it was a little over priced but these were in the minority and always complain at the prices we pay.
