Delta Hotels by Marriott St. Pierre Country Club

Set in 400 acres of Monmouthshire countryside just across the River Severn, Delta Hotels by Marriott St Pierre Country Club mixes a striking 14th-century manor house with two excellent parkland golf courses. The Old Course is the headline act, a proper test that hosted the 1996 Solheim Cup and still ranks as one of the standout parkland rounds in Wales. The shorter Mathern Course is a great foil, more forgiving off the tee but still full of trees, views and approach shots that punish a lapse in concentration.

It's also brilliantly placed for a UK break. You're around 25 minutes from Newport and 40 minutes from Cardiff, with straightforward access from the M4, M5 and M50. For societies, that means less time in the car and more time on the first tee.

Off the course, St Pierre delivers the full resort set-up, with spa treatments, an indoor pool, sauna and steam room, a gym and floodlit tennis courts. Add in two on-site bars and dining options, plus Chepstow and the Wye Valley nearby, and you've got a venue that works just as well for mixed groups as it does for golf-mad weekends. If you want a South Wales golf break that's easy to organise and hard to fault, this is a very safe bet.

Who is this for?

Golfers or groups looking for a quality parkland break within easy reach of the Midlands, South West England and South Wales. Couples and societies will both find plenty here, with two contrasting courses, strong hotel amenities and enough off-course variety to keep non-golfers happy.

Who is it best for?

Mid-to-low handicappers who want to test themselves on a genuine Solheim Cup venue, plus anyone seeking a well-rounded golf break that balances quality golf with comfort, dining and leisure facilities. The Mathern Course also makes this a smart choice for mixed-ability groups.

Old Course

St Pierre's Old Course is the main draw, and rightly so. This is a championship test that hosted the 1996 Solheim Cup and has matured beautifully in the years since. The course demands accuracy off the tee, with tree-lined fairways and strategically placed water hazards that punish loose shots. It's not overly long by modern standards, but the routing is clever and the greens are quick, so you'll need to think your way around rather than simply bash it.

The layout weaves through mature parkland with enough elevation change to keep things interesting, and the conditioning is consistently strong. Fairways are generous enough if you find them, but stray into the trees and you're scrambling. Water comes into play on several holes, most notably on the back nine where it starts to dictate club selection and strategy.

The closing stretch is where the Old Course really shows its teeth. The 17th is a stunning par three with the green almost entirely surrounded by water, the sort of hole that looks great in photos but plays even better in person. If you're anything like me, you'll take one look at that green and immediately start doing the maths on club selection, wind and how much you trust your swing that day. Miss the target and you're dropping, simple as that. The 18th then asks you to fire at an elevated green with trouble lurking if you bail out, a proper risk-reward finish that can make or break your card.

It's a course that rewards course management and punishes ego. If you're a mid-to-low handicapper looking for a proper test, the Old Course will give you everything you want. Higher handicappers can absolutely enjoy it too, but you'll need to play smart and accept that some holes are going to bite. This is Solheim Cup pedigree, and it still plays like it.

Mathern Course

The Mathern Course is shorter and more forgiving than the Old, but don't write it off as a warm-up loop. Opened in 1975, it's a charming parkland layout that weaves through mature woodland, with plenty of elevation change and some genuinely tricky approach shots. The trees are the main defence here, narrowing landing zones and forcing you to shape the ball on several holes.

What the Mathern lacks in length, it makes up for in character and scenery. The views across the Monmouthshire countryside are superb, and the course has a relaxed, enjoyable feel that makes it perfect for a second round or for groups with mixed abilities. It's also a great option if you want to work on your game without the pressure of a championship layout, the sort of course where you can experiment with different shots and still post a decent score.

The routing is clever, using the natural contours of the land to create interest without resorting to artificial hazards. You'll find yourself playing uphill, downhill and across slopes, and the greens are well protected by bunkers and the ever-present trees. It's not a course that will beat you up, but it demands respect and rewards good ball-striking.

Both courses complement each other brilliantly. Play the Old for the challenge and the bragging rights, then enjoy the Mathern for the scenery and the fun. Together, they make St Pierre one of the most complete golf destinations in South Wales, and the fact you can knock out 36 holes without leaving the estate is a real bonus for anyone planning a proper golf weekend.

Accommodation at Delta Hotels by Marriott St. Pierre Country Club

The hotel sits inside a beautifully preserved 14th-century manor house, so you get real character without sacrificing comfort. Rooms are spacious, well finished and geared for golf groups, with the usual modern essentials. It's the sort of place where the architecture alone is worth the visit, but you won't be roughing it when you get back from your round.

After 18 holes, you can head straight to The Beauty Rooms for a sports massage, body scrub or facial, or make use of the indoor pool, spa bath, sauna and steam room. There's a well-equipped gym if you're that way inclined, plus floodlit tennis courts for anyone fancying a knockabout in the evening. It's a proper resort set-up, and the breadth of facilities means non-golfers or anyone taking a day off the course won't be stuck for options.

The Cast Iron Bar and Grill keeps things relaxed and simple, ideal after 18 holes. The menus are geared for golfers, hearty classics, quick post-round options and plenty of choice for groups. For a quieter drink, the Trophy Bar overlooks the 18th green on the Old Course and works well for lighter bites and a post-round recap. Both venues suit the pace of a golf break, nothing fussy, just well-executed food and a decent drinks list.

The combination of serious golf, proper spa facilities and two solid dining options makes St Pierre a strong all-rounder. It's equally suited to a lads' weekend, a couples' break or a society outing where not everyone is obsessed with golf. The location helps too, close enough to Chepstow (the racecourse is a short drive if you fancy a flutter) and within striking distance of the Wye Valley if you want to explore between rounds.

Many areas of the hotel are quite tired and dated. The room above ours had a very squeaky bed and floorboards, so we were woken when they decided to get up and there was no way of sleeping through the noise. The room lacked a few basics - no bottles of water and we had to borrow a hairdryer from a neighbouring room.

Very easy to get to from London. Very friendly staff. Good rooms. Only negative was the inclusive dinner menu was the same on both nights.some variation would be nice. But would recommend strongly and will definitely revisit.

The hotel was adequate for the cost. The bar and reception staff were very good but the restaurant staff not so much. The hotel was quite full due to a race meeting at Chepstow and one or two staff around the restaurant didn't seem to mind letting us know that we were an inconvenience.

Rooms adequate but booked 12 months ago as a group would expect to be near each other - not in separate buildings. Not happy. Service and food first evening in Bar/Grill-very poor. Breakfast service non existant- cutlery dumped and told to lay it ourselves. Dinner and service 2nd evening in Restaurant much better.

Reception was excellent and there were good overall facilities. The rooms were not great and were put in the side rooms. The restaurant and bar areas were not linked making it difficult to work out where best to go.

Wet November day made it a challenging afternoon but course held up remarkably well and was very enjoyable to play.

The old course is fantastic, well looked after through out. Drainage is also great as huge downpour on Saturday but nearly all gone come Sunday morning. Will be looking forward to playing it again.

Unfortunately for us, the weather had been poor in the week leading up to our weekend and the Mathern Course was closed, which meant that the Old Course was busier than expected. The staff in the club shop and on the course were excellent, in very trying conditions. The course itself was very wet so we never really got to see it in all its glory. Understandably the fairways were holding water but the greens held up quite well. The fact that I marked this experience down as average is down to the weather preventing us from seeing the course in better playing conditions but I would definitely like to come back again in the future.

Weather too wet for buggies. Seemed the signage between holes was geared for men so quite difficult for ladies to follow.

Very difficult to get on during the first day. Confusion at the pro-shop on T-Off times. Missed playing last 4 holes because the previous players were so slow. Facilities on the course for PGA rated course were again limited/basic. Buggies were basic with no complimentary water or course maps. Felt there was no luxury.

A lot of rain overnight slowed the greens a bit but this course a lot easier than the old course
