Los Arqueros Golf & Country Club

Tucked into the Ronda Hills above Marbella, Los Arqueros Golf & Country Club is a proper piece of modern Spanish golf history. This was the first course designed by Seve Ballesteros back in 1991 and, in true Seve style, it rewards thinking your way round rather than simply hitting it miles.

How it plays

At just over 6,200 yards it isn't a brute for length, but it's far from a pushover. The greens are on the small side and not heavily bunkered, yet the slopes can be awkward. Miss on the wrong tier and you'll spend the next few minutes trying to work out how to leave yourself an uphill putt. Position matters here, both off the tee and into the greens, and anyone who plays smart golf will walk off with a better score than someone swinging out of their shoes.

What to expect

It's a parkland layout with mature trees framing a lot of holes, plus enough elevation change to keep things interesting without feeling like a trek. When the breeze gets up, sensible targets and the right side of the fairway matter even more, especially into those sloping greens. The setting sits high enough to catch the mountain air, and the views stretch out towards the coast on clear days.

Who is this for? Golfers who want a strategic, mid-length test near Marbella with a big-name designer attached and a calmer round than some of the headline resort courses nearby.

Who is it best for? Mid-handicappers and mixed-ability groups who value course management and good greens over pure power.

Los Arqueros Golf & Country Club

The tourist friendly, challenging and stunning course commands an enviable mountain setting and magnificent views over Andalusian hills and the Mediterranean. Located in Benahavís, only 5 km. from San Pedro de Alcántara and near beautiful Ronda, on the Ronda road.

Signature Hole: Hole 13, Par 5, 458 metres (501 yards), SI 6

Los Arqueros’ 13th deserves its status as signature hole not just for the challenge that it presents, but also for its magnificent scenery of ‘Mare Nostrum’. On clear days, it is even possible to see the coast of Africa and the Atlas Mountain Range. The golf is nothing short of spectacular either, and from an elevated tee the fairway starts off narrow, before it veers off to the right.

It is possible to attempt a ‘Seve’ in cutting the corner and going for the green in two. However, this is a dangerous approach and anything to the right of the green will result in a lost ball, while anything short will be swallowed up by the greenside bunker. A fade would suit this approach well, as the left side of the green is guarded by an uphill slope. A stunning golf hole, offering much in the way of risk-reward.

Very tight interesting course. Greens were lightening quick.

Extremely tight course which could remove the fun for most people. Me and my son fortunately hit solid shots on the tightest holes but this challenge and many blind shots make for a testing round.

Poor

This course is not being looked after, greens and tee boxes are awful> Seve would be embarrassed !!!!

This is an extremely difficult course to play, but the views were spectacular, the fairways were very well maintained, would certainly play again. On the web site is states evidence of a handicap is required. We had two golfers in front of us who clearly had no handicap as they struggled to even hit the ball, thus they slowed play and made it frustrating at times.

Tricky course. There are some great views but the slopes are difficult and we were very grateful for the buggy.

Arqueros Golf & Country Club is a very challenging course but totally worth it. The pro shop team were fantastic. I would recommend it to a golf society that enjoys a proper golf course and 19th hole
