Golf at Gullane goes back to the 1600s, although the club itself was formally established in 1884. The beginnings of the No.1 Course are a bit hazy and nobody can say for certain who first laid out the routing. What we do know is that Willie Park Jnr. later added two more courses to the property, Gullane No.2 in 1898 and Gullane No.3 in 1910.

All three courses sit on some of the best links turf on Scotland's East coast, right at the west end of Gullane village in East Lothian, around 45 minutes from Edinburgh airport. Get up onto the higher ground and you'll see why people rave about the setting, with big views back towards Edinburgh and across the Forth to the Kingdom of Fife.

The big win here is underfoot. Gullane tends to stay firmer and more playable than plenty of inland tracks, even when the weather turns. The turf drains well and you'll often find the courses open when others are shut, which makes it a solid option for autumn and winter golf. If you're building an East Lothian itinerary, it's well worth planning at least two rounds here, and if time allows, playing all three gives you proper variety without ever leaving the same patch of classic linksland.

Who is this for? Anyone who wants a proper Scottish links day, springy turf, sea air and a bit of history under your feet, with the bonus of three courses on the same site.

Who is it best for? Golfers who love traditional links golf and want a genuine East Lothian must-play. No.1 is the headline act, but No.2 and No.3 are ideal for adding another round without blowing the budget, especially for groups and societies.

Golf Courses at Gullane Golf Club

Gullane No.1 Course

Gullane No. 1 was established in 1884, and is one of the greatest golf courses in Scotland. There are some unforgettable holes here, not least the 7th, whose lofty position affords endless views, and the 3rd, which was recently included in Golf Magazine's Top 500 holes in the world article.

Unusually, for a links course, there are some major elevation changes in the layout requiring a certain amount of uphill and downhill shots. The silky greens, pot-bunkers and knee-high rough make Gullane No. 1 absolutely essential to a golf break in East Lothian. It has also played host to the Scottish Amateur Championship has hosted the Scottish Open twice and held Open Championship Qualifying.

Gullane Golf Club - Gullane No.1 Course

Gullane No. 1 was established in 1884 and remains one of the greatest golf courses in Scotland. There are some genuinely unforgettable holes here, not least the 7th, whose elevated tee affords endless views across the Forth, and the 3rd, which was recently included in Golf Magazine's Top 500 holes in the world.

Unusually for a links course, there are some pronounced elevation changes in the layout, so you'll hit plenty of shots that don't feel very "flatlands links". The climbs and drops add a real strategic element, especially when the wind gets up. Club selection becomes half the fun and half the battle, and the pot bunkers are exactly the sort you can't afford to find if you're trying to score. The greens are typically quick and true, and the rough can be properly punitive once it gets to summer length.

The course has serious pedigree. It has played host to the Scottish Amateur Championship, hosted the Scottish Open twice and held Open Championship Qualifying. That tells you everything you need to know about the standard of test you're facing. When conditions are up, No.1 will expose every weakness in your game, but it's never unfair and the turf quality means you always get a fair bounce.

If you're travelling with a mixed-ability group, No.1 is the round you build the day around. Pair it with No.2 or No.3 and you get a great one-two of championship feel and very playable links golf in the same place. Gullane No. 1 is absolutely essential to a golf break in East Lothian.

We teed off at 10 oclock with a terrible rain and wind. We have asked the caddie master for changing our round with no success. When we complete the round, the weather was nice and nobody start a round.Obiously, the caddy master should have offered us to play later with a good weather. When we come back, there are no towels to take a hot shower.
