Forest of Arden

Very Good See all 891 reviews

Set in the West Midlands countryside, the Forest of Arden is one of those rare UK resorts that actually delivers the full package: two Donald Steel layouts, a proper 4-star hotel and enough on-site facilities to keep golfers and non-golfers happy. Both courses were designed by Steel and the Championship Arden is the headline act, with serious tournament pedigree including multiple European Tour events such as the British Masters and the English Open. Champions here include Colin Montgomerie, Darren Clarke and Sam Horsfield, so you know the course has been tested by the best.

The best bit is how easy it is to get to. You're under 30 minutes from Birmingham city centre and around 10 minutes from the NEC and Birmingham Airport, but once you're on site it feels nicely tucked away in Warwickshire countryside. Ideal for a quick weekend dash, a society break or a "one night, two rounds" mission.

Off the course, the hotel has 214 rooms, the Cedarwood Spa and the Fairway Bar & Grill, so you can keep things simple and stay on-site all weekend. If your group is mixed ability, that's where Forest of Arden really works. The Arden gives the low-handicappers a proper test, while the shorter Aylesford is all about accuracy and tidy scoring rather than brute force. Add in strong practice facilities, a 16-bay floodlit range and a golf academy with resident PGA pros, and you've got a venue that suits everything from competitive mates' trips to relaxed golf-and-spa breaks.

If you're planning a UK golf break with easy travel and two contrasting courses, Forest of Arden is well worth a look.

Who is this for? Golfers or groups seeking a high-quality UK break that combines serious championship golf with excellent hotel facilities, spa amenities and easy access from Birmingham and the wider Midlands.

Who is it best for? Mid-to-low handicappers who want to test themselves on a proven European Tour venue, plus mixed-ability groups and societies who value having two contrasting courses, strong practice facilities and a full-service resort base with dining, leisure and spa options all on site.

Golf Courses at Forest of Arden

Arden Golf Course

The Aylesford Resort Course is considerably shorter than its prestigious neighbour, measuring less than 6,000 yards, but it retains many of the Donald Steel hallmarks that define the Arden Course, including thoughtful routing, well-designed greens and strategic bunkering. The expert attention of the greenkeeping team ensures the Aylesford remains in equally immaculate condition, making it a genuine pleasure to play rather than simply a warm-up option.

Underestimate the Aylesford at your peril. While the yardage may be forgiving, there are penalties to be paid for wayward shots, and the layout demands accuracy and course management rather than brute force. This makes it an excellent choice for higher handicappers, juniors or anyone looking to work on their short game and scoring, while still providing enough interest and challenge to keep better players engaged.

The Aylesford adds genuine variety to the Forest of Arden's offering, allowing groups with mixed abilities to enjoy a round together or giving returning visitors the chance to experience a different test. It's also ideal for a quick 18 holes if you're short on time, or as a second round on the same day after tackling the championship Arden Course in the morning.

In addition to the two 18-hole courses, the Forest of Arden Golf Club is home to a first-class golf academy where visitors can seek guidance from one of the resident PGA professionals. The 16-bay floodlit driving range is complemented by an extensive short game and bunker practice area, plus a separate putting green, giving you everything you need to sharpen your game before heading out onto the course. Whether you're working on a specific part of your game or just want to loosen up before your round, the practice facilities here are among the best you'll find at a UK resort.

Aylesford Golf Course

The Arden is the reason most golfers book here. It's a Donald Steel design with tour pedigree and it plays like it: strong from the tee, proper green complexes and bunkering that makes you think. From the back tees it stretches to 7,213 yards, but with sensible tee options it's playable for mixed-ability groups without losing the character of the layout.

It has hosted major European Tour events including the British Masters and the English Open, with winners such as Colin Montgomerie, Darren Clarke and Sam Horsfield. During professional tournaments, scoring was often low, with Ian Woosnam and Per-Ulrik Johansson both posting four-round totals of 19 under par. That history shows in the presentation too. It's typically in excellent shape year-round, a legacy of its tournament pedigree and the expert attention of the greenkeeping team, and the greens tend to run true.

Steel's design features some truly distinctive holes, with strategic variety that rewards course management as much as distance. The layout suits golfers of all abilities when you pick the right tees, but it demands accuracy and commitment when you're pushing for a score. If you strike the ball well and find the fairways, scoring opportunities are there to be taken, and the outstanding putting surfaces will give you a genuine chance to convert if you've hit a good approach.

Save a little in the tank for the closing stretch. The finishing holes ask for accuracy and commitment, and the 18th, an exacting par 3, is a brilliant way to end a match. With this level of quality and conditioning, it's easy to see why so many golfers return to the Forest of Arden for their UK golf breaks year after year.

In addition, the Forest of Arden Golf Club is home to a first class golf academy, where visitors can seek the guidance of one of the resident PGA professionals.

Accommodation at Forest of Arden

The 4-star Forest of Arden hotel has 214 rooms and makes an easy base for a UK golf break, especially if you want everything on-site. You're close to Birmingham, the NEC and the airport, but the setting still feels calm and rural, surrounded by 10,000 acres of Warwickshire countryside.

Rooms are modern, comfortable and a good size for golf groups, with flexible twin and double setups depending on who's travelling. They're furnished in a tasteful, contemporary style with all the amenities you'd expect from a 4-star property. After 36 holes, it's the sort of place where you can genuinely switch off.

Fairway Bar & Grill is the main event for dinner, with a smart-casual feel and a menu built around quality ingredients. The kitchen focuses on international cuisine with a local sourcing approach, so you're getting fresh, well-prepared dishes without the stuffiness. Breakfast is available each morning, with a choice between full English or continental, and afternoon tea is a nice extra if you're making a weekend of it.

Zest is the more relaxed option for lighter bites and coffees through the day, handy if your tee time is tight or you just want something quick between rounds. The outdoor terrace is a particular highlight in warmer months, providing a lovely spot to enjoy a drink and reflect on the day's golf. Big screens around the property mean you can keep up with your favourite sport if there's something on.

Cedarwood Spa is a big tick if you're travelling with non-golfers or you fancy a recovery session after a tough round. Treatments range from massages and facials to body scrubs, wraps, manicures, pedicures and waxing. The leisure club features an excellent swimming pool, sauna, steam room and gymnasium, while outdoor facilities include tennis courts, table tennis and croquet. For golfers, this means you can arrive a day early or stay on after your final round to make the most of the spa and leisure amenities, turning a golf break into a more complete getaway.

The Forest of Arden is located 30 minutes from Birmingham city centre, just 10 minutes from both the NEC Complex and Birmingham Airport.

We’ve been here a few times and this year, maybe because we had the weather the quality was outstanding

Bedrooms were good and beds comfortable - bars are very expensive (£4 for a coffee) and the efficiency of the barstaff is pretty poor. Waiting staff were good but a bit more of a smile and a good morning at the restaurant front desk wouldn't have gone amiss.

Great course - possibly my favourite outside of the “open courses” As per previous the halfway house would have been better with fresh sandwiches. A number of us ate the hot snacks and all of us threw them in a bin after a couple of bites.

Great first day and a nice introduction before we played the Arden Course. The halfway house wasn’t up to much and maybe a selection of fresh sandwiches would have helped

We played 2 rounds on the Arden course - the first we only managed 15 holes before sunset (after 5 hours) due to the ridiculous slow play in front. We complained after 9 holes as there were no marshals on the course and received a very poor reaction from the pro shop with no acknowledgement of an issue and a promise of a marshal who we never saw on the course. Our group was pretty fed up. The second round was better only in the fact that we teed off earlier so were able to make it round in 6 hours. Again no marshals on the course. Slow play will kill off returning customers - we won't be back.

Was a disgrace there were no Marshalls to keep play moving we teed off at 2pm and it took 3hours 10 mins for 9 holes we had to stop playing after 15 holes as it was dark it’s a long way to come for 15 holes there are golfers playing that can’t hit the ball there should be a handicap limit to play the Arden course as it’s quite hard
