Emirates Golf Club

Excellent See all 11 reviews

When Emirates Golf Club opened in 1988 it became the first all-grass championship course in the Gulf, quickly earning the nickname 'the desert miracle'. These days, with Dubai firmly established as a top winter-sun golf destination, Emirates still feels like the city's headline venue, with two championship courses plus a handy 9-hole par 3.

The star of the show is the Majlis, the headline act in the UAE and a proper bucket-list backdrop with the skyline sitting right there behind you. It's also the long-time home of the Omega Dubai Desert Classic, one of the biggest weeks on the European Tour calendar. Tiger, McIlroy and Seve have all won here, which tells you everything you need to know about the calibre of the test. Our Chief Holiday Officer, Lee Westwood, has teed it up here plenty over the years too.

If you fancy a change of pace, the Faldo Course (designed by Sir Nick Faldo) asks different questions off the tee and rewards sensible course management as much as raw distance. And if time is tight, the par-3 is ideal for a warm-up, a quick knock, or getting everyone in the group swinging before the main event.

Who is this for?

Golfers chasing a tour venue in Dubai, especially for winter sun, short breaks and group trips.

Who is it best for?

Anyone who loves pristine conditioning and a 'proper' championship feel, particularly mid-to-low handicappers looking to test themselves.

Majlis Course

The Majlis is the Emirates' original layout, but it remains one of the most challenging in the region, and hosts the world's best professionals for the Dubai Desert Classic every year. The idyllic holes created by designer Karl Litten are carved into the great swathes of sandy wasteland, and combine to produce a 7,185 yard championship course of the finest standard and the most dramatic character.

What the pro's say:

"I always enjoy spending time at the club whether it's during the Dubai Desert Classic or when I'm holidaying with my family in Dubai.  My greatest memory of the Emirates Golf Club was in 2001 when I won the Dubai Desert Classic playing alongside Tiger.  I look forward to returning soon." – Thomas Bjorn

"It's incredible. When I first played here in 1989, the Emirates Golf Club was right out in the desert and now - as you see with the skyscrapers all around it - it's right in the middle of town.” – Barry Lane

Signature hole- No. 8 (Majlis Course)

Par 4, 459 yards (Black), SI 3

The spectacular 8th hole at the Majilis Course is a real favourite amongst many of the pros. In fact, so much so that Justin Rose considers it to be in his top 9 holes in the world. At stroke index 3, the hole is challenging and plays long due to its dogleg right and uphill fairway.

From the tee, the golfer is greeted with the magnificent view of skyscrapers ahead, and these can be used as a reference to the line of the tee shot. The green is both small and fairly undulating, and combined with a long yardage, this makes for a tough approach shot. A great hole, with little margin for error and requiring a solid drive to allow yourself to make the green in regulation!

Faldo Course

Since Nick Faldo completed his comprehensive refurbishment, the Faldo course has deservedly stood side by side with the more prestigious Majlis layout. Now stretched to a wearying 7,328 yards, the Faldo challenges both ball striking and creativity. The putting surfaces are extremely challenging, while the ever-present expanses of water can quickly upend your scorecard.

Always in terrific condition, the Faldo is now well worth playing during your trip to the awesome Emirates Club especially now you can play this course at night!

The impressive clubhouse at the Emirates is designed to resemble a Bedouin tented village, and is a reminder of the region's humble origins.

Our tee time was brought forward so we played in daylight for the first 9 and floodlight second 9 - not ideal in the dusk! The French restaurant was busy and over priced for what amounted to a bistro style meal and on departure we were ushered into a private car by ground staff which was twice the price of a normal taxi- sharp practice suspected!

Super Course. Drinks are expensive even by Dubai standards though!

Golf course was in excellent condition and it was like gentleman's golf with very few players out at 1030
