Dale Hill Hotel, Golf & Country Club

Set across 350 acres in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Dale Hill is a cracking South East golf break with two proper championship courses. The Woosnam Course, designed by Ian Woosnam, is modern parkland golf with enough bite for good players but it won't batter higher handicaps either. The Old Course is shorter on the card but tighter through mature woodland, so you'll want to keep it in play.

It's around an hour from London and about 25 minutes from Royal Tunbridge Wells, so it works brilliantly for a quick escape rather than a full travel day. Off the course, you've got a well-reviewed four-star hotel, two restaurants and a leisure centre for a post-round swim or sauna.

Who is this for? Golfers or mixed-ability groups after a weekend break with two contrasting rounds, solid food and easy logistics.

Who is it best for? Societies and small groups chasing variety, couples wanting golf plus leisure time and mid-to-high handicappers who like straightforward, enjoyable golf in peaceful countryside.

Golf Courses at Dale Hill Hotel, Golf & Country Club

Old Course

Dale Hill Hotel, Golf & Country Club, Old Course

The Old Course carves through the mature woodland that is characteristic of the whole estate and provides visitors with splendid views of the Sussex Weald. Despite not being particularly lengthy, the Old measures 5,856 yards, the par of 69 remains a considerable test. The front nine is more open, while the woodland that dominates the final holes makes for an exacting closing stretch.

The Old Course is the more traditional of Dale Hill's two layouts, with tree-lined fairways and a classic parkland feel that contrasts nicely with the Woosnam's modern design. At 5,856 yards off the back tees, it's not about length, it's about accuracy and course management. The par of 69 means there's little room for error, and the tight lies and mature trees demand straight hitting.

The front nine opens up the shoulders a bit, with wider fairways and more forgiving landing areas. But once you make the turn, the woodland closes in and the challenge ramps up. It's not long, but it tightens up on the back nine. If you're playing in a society, it's the sort of track where a sensible three-wood and a wedge can beat driver trouble.

The views across the Weald are superb, particularly from the higher holes, and the mature woodland gives the course a timeless, established feel that's rare on modern layouts. The Old Course is ideal for mid-handicappers who want a fair test without the intimidation factor of a 7,000-yard monster. It's also a great warm-up or second-round option if you're playing both courses during your stay.

Woosnam Course

Dale Hill Hotel, Golf & Country Club, Woosnam Course

Dale Hill received a shot in the arm in 1997, when Ryder Cup legend and US Masters winner Ian Woosnam added the resort's second championship course. The modern parkland layout, measuring 6,512 yards, is designed in line with USGA construction principles and features many challenging holes as it sweeps across the natural undulations of the landscape.

The Woosnam is the perfect balance, as it challenges the highly skilled players without becoming too difficult for the average visitor. Highlights include the spectacular 16th, a short hole played across a severe gully. Pick the right club, commit to it and don't let the view talk you into steering one.

At 6,512 yards, the Woosnam offers genuine championship length without being overly penal. The fairways are generous enough to encourage aggressive play, but the approach shots demand accuracy, particularly on the longer par fours. The greens are built to USGA-style construction principles, meaning they hold well but run true and fast when conditions allow.

The routing takes full advantage of the estate's natural contours, with several holes offering panoramic views across the High Weald. The closing stretch is particularly strong, with a series of demanding par fours that test every club in the bag. For societies and groups, the Woosnam provides a fair but thorough examination of your game. It's a strong modern parkland test and a real step up from what you often find this close to London.

Accommodation at Dale Hill Hotel, Golf & Country Club

The hotel keeps a traditional country-club look, but the rooms are modern, comfortable and well set up for a golf stay. There are 50 bedrooms in total, with a mix that suits couples and groups, plus plenty of space to stash your kit between rounds. Depending on where you're based, you can look out over the courses or across the Weald, which is a pretty good backdrop to the morning coffee.

Food is a big part of the appeal here. The Wealden View Restaurant is the smarter option for dinner, serving a strong menu with seasonal specials that showcase local produce. The Orangery Restaurant is a more relaxed choice for classics and crowd-pleasers after a long day. The Lounge Bar is ideal for the pre-dinner pint or a quick recap of the damage on the back nine.

If your group likes a bit of downtime, the leisure centre has a heated indoor pool, gym and sauna, so non-golfers are well catered for too. You're also in prime High Weald countryside, with local walks nearby and fishing available in the area if you fancy swapping a wedge for a rod for a few hours.

Dale Hill is also home to a PGA Game Improvement Centre, making it just the place for both practice and tuition. The resort's two courses and excellent facilities make it perfect for a corporate or society outing.

The staff at this hotel were fantastic could not do enough for us. Even kept the restaurant open for us because of a late arrival. I did spill a cup of tea on the sheet of my bed unfortunately they did not change the bedding . We were disappointed with the menu because we had the same menu for 4 nights. And the breakfast food was not very well presented and only Luke warm at best .

Great location and fantastic golf. I would revisit for this alone. The bar area and quality of food in the bar including cleanliness is very poor indeed and I hope this is improved.

The rooms were excellent, really comfortable beds and modern facilities. The Hotel itself was good but décor was a bit dated and could probably do with modernising. It looks like it hasn’t been touched since the 80’s. We all thought the food was excellent. The menu was superb, dinner and breakfast were fantastic – I’d visit again just for the food. Also, the head guy running the restaurant deserves particular praise, he was old school and absolutely superb. Overall it was a good experience and we would definitely go back.

Very good hotel, "Your Golf Travel" did not pass on the problems on the Woosnam course they are having--but the Hotel when they heard really looked after us good food, good service good value. Would go again.

Very fresh and modern room. Lovely bathroom and shower. Balcony overlooking the course, really nice. Hotel restaurant food was good quality, but a tad fussy for hungry golfers to be honest. However, there was an option to mix and match with the bar menu, which we discovered for night two. More substantial food for fellas who have built up an appetite on the course. Bar and restaurant prices would be a bit steep if you weren't on an all inclusive deal.

Not a large hotel. Very friendly & welcoming staff. Clean rooms with comfortable beds and nice quiet location. Good quality pub grub type dinner and great selection of tasty hot and cold food for breakfast.

We had a great time on our golf break to Dale Hill. The hotel was good, staff were helpful and friendly and the food was good too.

Now to the golf...

The Woosnam Course was poor. It was very wet and as such the greens weren’t very good. Having said that the Old Course was much better and everyone enjoyed it.

All in all its winter golf at the moment and this is the risk you take when you play at this time of year. However when you look at what we paid it was great value for money.

We will be back in touch with YGT and booking a trip next year.

Poor fairways but I understand that this is not the fault of the club, hope they can repair for the next season.

Course very interesting, greens excellent but fairways , as we were advised were poor.

Really enjoyed the round. There are some absolutely stunning holes on the course – really beautiful! Only gripe would be that some of the rough was quite long and had grass cuttings all over it which made finding any wayward balls into the rough really difficult to find. I couldn’t understand why it had to be kept so long and why the grass cuttings weren’t collected. It slowed the round up looking for balls which should have been easy to find. All in all a nice place and we would go again and hope to play the Woosnam next time too.

I loved this course. Some open holes to start, and then many among the trees. I thought the greens here were a shade better than the Woosnam. Some spectacular and imaginative holes, with beautifully interesting and contoured fairways and greens. Shorter hitters may find it on the difficult side, particularly if the wind blows. One of the nicer courses I have played....I WILL be back.
