Signature Collection

Nestled in a thousand acres of Cheshire countryside, Carden Park is a cracking option for an English golf break, with two championship parkland golf courses and a 4-star hotel on a proper country estate. You'll play The Nicklaus, a strategic Jack Nicklaus design with long views towards the Welsh hills, then switch it up on the Cheshire Course, which finishes with a dramatic clifftop 18th back towards the resort.

Both courses reward smart play over brute force, with natural hazards, elevation changes and clever routing that keep you thinking all the way to the clubhouse. The Nicklaus stretches to 7,045 yards and features 'double option' holes where you choose your line of attack, while the Cheshire plays 6,653 yards through rolling terrain and sandstone outcrops. Between rounds, the estate offers a renovated leisure club with pool, hydrotherapy spa, sauna and steam room, plus a five-star spa opened in 2020 with thermal facilities and a tranquil spa garden.

Location is another strength. Carden Park sits just 30 minutes from Chester, 20 minutes from Wrexham and 50 minutes from Manchester Airport, making it an easy drive from across the North West and North Wales. The resort has 198 rooms, five dining venues including the Two AA Rosette Vines restaurant, and enough space to feel uncrowded even when busy.

Who is this for? Golfers or groups wanting a weekend or short break that combines two contrasting championship courses with quality accommodation, leisure facilities and easy access from the North West, North Wales or Midlands.

Who is it best for? Mid-to-low handicappers who enjoy strategic, parkland golf with elevation and scenery, plus societies and corporate groups looking for a full-service resort with variety, space and strong dining options.

Golf Courses at Carden Park Hotel, Golf Resort & Spa

Nicklaus Course

The Nicklaus Course, designed by Jack Nicklaus and his son Steve, is the headline layout at Carden Park and it unfolds beautifully across the estate with views stretching to the Welsh hills. The course can stretch to 7,045 yards from the tips, but even from forward tees there's more than enough challenge for single-figure players. This is strategic golf, where picking targets and playing for angles pays dividends, especially on the 'double option' holes at the 7th and 15th where you can choose your line of attack and approach the green from different angles.

It's a clever design feature that rewards course management and keeps the round interesting, especially on repeat visits. If you're the sort who enjoys plotting your way round rather than just launching driver, you'll have a lot of fun here. The layout moves through parkland, around natural water features and across gentle elevation changes, with the Cheshire countryside providing a scenic backdrop throughout.

A Longest Drive competition works well on the 4th, while the 16th is ideal for Nearest the Pin. An average fourball can expect to complete the Nicklaus Course in around 4¾ hours. The course stands up well for societies and group weekends, offering a genuine test without feeling overly penal, making it a favourite for groups who want a championship challenge without the intimidation factor.

Cheshire Course

The Cheshire Course climbs through wooded fells behind the clubhouse and plays 6,653 yards, par 72. It's a highly technical layout where natural hazards, elevation changes and tight lies test your skills from the first tee to the last green. The routing builds to a dramatic finish, with tough par-4s at the 16th and 17th before the 18th tee perched atop sandstone cliffs overlooking the resort and Welsh hills beyond. It's a properly photogenic closing stretch that ensures the round stays with you long after you've signed your card.

The 9th is ideal for a Longest Drive competition, while the 15th works well for Nearest the Pin, keeping competitive spirits high even late in the round. An average fourball can expect to complete the Cheshire Course in 4½ hours. The course demands accuracy and course management, with natural hazards including streams, trees and elevation punishing wayward shots. It's a genuine test that complements the Nicklaus Course perfectly, offering variety and a different set of challenges.

Accommodation at Carden Park Hotel, Golf Resort & Spa

Most Comfortable Rooms UK & Ireland 2024

The mile-long drive in is a nice little scene-setter, with the hotel appearing through mature parkland. There are 198 rooms in total, most looking out over the Nicklaus Course or the wider estate. Classic king and twin rooms include an en-suite bath and power shower, flat-screen satellite TV, tea and coffee facilities and complimentary Wi-Fi, ideal when you're back from 36 holes and ready to put your feet up.

You've got five spots to choose from for food and drink. Jack's Bar sits in the clubhouse overlooking the Cheshire Course, serving bacon sandwiches, seasonal light bites and post-round pints in a relaxed setting that welcomes golfers and non-golfers alike. Redmond's Brasserie is the go-to for most guests, offering a menu that covers all bases, from succulent steaks and grilled dishes to traditional favourites like beer-battered haddock with chips and the signature Carden steak burger. It suits different tastes and group sizes without feeling formal.

The Vines is the fine-dining option, holding Two AA Rosettes and offering an eight-course tasting menu built around fresh local ingredients and inspired by the nearby vineyard. It's the kind of place you book ahead for a special evening. Morgan's Bar and Goldie's Lounge serve as the central gathering spots, perfect for a drink before dinner or a nightcap after a long day.

The leisure club has a modern gym, spin studio, pool, hydrotherapy pool, sauna and steam room. There's also The Spa at Carden with thermal facilities and a spa garden, which is a strong shout if you're travelling with non-golfers or you fancy a recovery session between rounds.

Carden Park is located in Broxton, just 20 minutes south-east of Chester and 50 minutes from Manchester International Airport, making it one of the most accessible golf resorts in the North West.

Beautiful hotel in a fabulous setting but disappointed with the golf experience. The greens were not in very good condition. I played here a few years ago and they were much better then. Also, there was no course management, we were behind several groups of hackers with no course etiquette, consequently me and my mate had one five and a half hour round and one four and three quarters.

Quality but bar prices a little steep. All meals were very good . Decent choices but £25 allowance limited these. Upgraded without cost to courtyard room which was great - small private balcony for drinks etc. Nice.

To clarify we were in a 2 ball and it took 4h 30m but we followed a party so accepted it would be slow. The course again was in good condition considering the overnight weather. Greens a little slower than the Nicklaus but still good. We found this course was not as demanding thank goodness but thoroughly enjoyable and more picturesque. Worth another visit to see if we can play them better!

To clarify above speed was about right we played 2pm it took 3h 45m (2 ball). The course is difficult greens very undulating and fast. That said really enjoyed the afternoon.
