Delta Hotels by Marriott Breadsall Priory Country Club

8.2
Very Good See all 59 reviews

Found in the rolling countryside of central England, just south of the Peak District National Park, Delta Hotels by Marriott Breadsall Priory Country Club's recently refurbished hotel is the perfect spot for a country escape. Golfers are able to enjoy two distinct championship golf courses, the Priory and the Moorland. The Priory steals the show as one of the East Midland’s top tracks, but the Moorland, designed by Donald Steel, is more than worthy of being played.

Delta Hotels by Marriott Breadsall Priory Country Club is located in Derbyshire, on the outskirts of Derby itself, this great central location makes it easy to get to for golfers across the UK. The hotel at Breadsall Priory Marriott Hotel & Country Club is a piece of local history, a magnificent Grade II listed building that dates back to the 11th Century. However, nothing inside is out of date, with excellently appointed rooms and modern facilities, including a spa and restaurant.

Golf Courses at Delta Hotels by Marriott Breadsall Priory Country Club

Priory Course

The Championship Priory course is the premier layout at the resort, and since its inception in 1977, has emerged as one of the best in the local area. The Priory skirts the stunning hotel, and requires accurate play to negotiate the tree-lined fairways. Though not particularly long, the Priory is demanding, and attracts visitors back again and again with its charm and spectacular views.

Course Information
Par 70
Designed by David Cox
Opened for play 1977
Tees
White 6,027 yards SSS 69.7
Yellow 5,843 yards SSS 69
Red 5,251 yards SSS 71

Moorland Course

Breadsall Priory's second course is the Moorland, which differs in style to the Priory, offering golfers a great variety. Set amidst the lush Derbyshire countryside, the Moorland is more open, but is also fortunate to offer views to equal its neighbour.

Breadsall Priory is one of the few resorts in the East Midlands to have two 18-hole courses, making it a great choice for a golf break.

Signature Hole- No 12 (Priory Course):

Par 4, 346 yards, SI 6

The Priory's signature 12th provides the golfer with spectacular views from an elevated tee. The fairway has a slight dogleg right, and with the pin often placed at the right side of the small green, it is important to hit to the left side so that the tree doesn't block your view on the approach!

Whilst individually staff are extremely helpful and friendly, overall the hotel fell well below expectations. This is the first time I have stayed in a 4* hotel which didn't provide bedside lamps, the mattress cover was stained and the beds rock hard. Housekeeping was poor: the floors were not cleaned daily, toilet rolls and beverages were not replaced. Breakfast was very good as was the other food but on one occasion we waited over 45 minutes between finishing starters and being served main course. Restaurant staff training in some respects is poor.

It has been several years since I last stayed and the rooms are rather tired and in need of refurbishment. We were disappointed as Gareth had requested an upgrade for one of our party who was celebrating a significant birthday (80) but this was not forthcoming. Dinner was served in the leisure centre grill which had no atmosphere compared with the Priory restaurant which we have used previously, however the food was good and service excellent. Not the hotel to stay at for a celebration.

This hotel is very good at providing a really good golf break, starting with check in (they bring all the forms and keys to you in the bar following your first round. Dinners were well organised with plenty of staff on hand and food arriving pipping hot. Rooms were large with 2 doubles, plenty of wardrobe space, desk etc. The large pool was great and at a nice temperature along with a jacuzzi, steam room and sauna.

Lovely hotel and good staff. The bar was OK. We had dinner included and it was Ok - the portions and style of food was a bit light for a gang of golfers. We only found three small prawns each in the prawn cocktail.

As discussed with Paul. Our stay this time was way below the standard we have enjoyed in previous years. 1. Golf courses as brilliant as ever. 2. Rooms as good as ever. 3. Dining. We have normally eaten in the restaurant and the food has always been great. However, this trip was a disaster. We were told when we went down to the restaurant to dine that we would be eating in a room off the golf bar. We were not happy with this at all. All dressed up and nowhere to go really. I complained that it was a long way away and the ladies had stiletto heels on. So they ran us round to the room in a golf buggy. Not good. The place we were shown to was little more than a McDonalds. Walls had brick wallpaper on, very tacky. The tables were little more than Formica tables. Another 2 tables were occupied with 2's. No atmosphere at all. The food was inedible to say the least. It was awful. Mush. Went back to the room for a packet of crisps. We have been going to this hotel for approx 10 years and always praised the hotel. However, we will not be returning there again. Sadly.

Hotel rooms very comfortable & immaculately clean. Welcoming staff. BUT - food let them down badly. We sent food back on THREE separate occasions. A pear & walnut tart with pastry that was too had to cut let alone eat; it came back as a totally different tart but at least edible; LUKE WARM cooked breakfast - a complaint elicited "I'll tell chef"; a salmon & avocado sandwich that contained no avocado - corrected second time around. Dinner for four in the Grill Room (no restaurant) took over TWO & a HALF HOURS. Stayed here before with YGT - food excellent. NOT this time. Will we be returning??

The only reason I haven't given 4* for "Value for Money" is that outside a hotel/golf package deal, prime time green fees are £55 for a moorland course of average interest.

One of the hilliest courses I've played in terms of the slope on the fairways and the greens. This is a course that demands good ball striking, getting out of position incurs a penalty. The greens are quite fast and all have pronounced gradients. It's not a long course but don't take it lightly. Has great views and varies between tree lined and fairly open.

A short, very open course with several shots that could come close to other holes. As there were a number of blind tee shots we were surprised that there was very little way of determining when a green was clear. The fairways are quite generous but the rough is thick if you go too far off line. Definitely not as hilly as the Priory course.

Priory was one of the best we have every played. On check in we found our Monday booking had been deleted from their systems which was worrying but they gave us a tee time. They also managed to put us out earlier on the Tuesday as heavy rain was forecast. Brilliant club - drinks excessively expensive but you expect this in Marriotts.

This course is amazing. I’ve played a lot of nice courses including Stoke Park and Forest of Arden and this course has a wow factor. Despite playing in 45mph winds, all 18 of each really enjoyed the course and all said how beautiful it was. It’s very up and down and as referenced the weather was awful so no buggies were allowed on the course. You certainly know you have been walking with me registering over 20,000 steps according to my phone but all in all a very enjoyable course with cleverly allocated fairways and greens

The Moorlands is a very enjoyable course and on the day had very challenging pin positions. Poor shots are not always punished as a lot of holes run parallel with each other. Despite the course being full our 4 ball got round in just over 4 hours and the weather was dire. It’s great that the venues two courses differ so much The reason it hasn’t got five stars for facilities is that there are ltd 150 markers but this isn’t an issue if you have a GPS watch

Again, a really well presented course. It's VERY hilly with some quite steep cross-slopes & difficult approaches. We walked it - and were pretty tired at the end of the round. It's LONG (and played long too). Surprised to find we were still playing off winter tees / mats (not on the Moorland course). Superb surroundings. Not a course for the faint-hearted or novice golfer - it bites!!!! Not sure we'd play it again if we returned. Consider a buggy if you're not reasonably fit!!
