Delta Hotels by Marriott Breadsall Priory Country Club

8.2
Very Good See all 59 reviews

Just south of the Peak District, Delta Hotels by Marriott Breadsall Priory Country Club is a proper Midlands golf-break favourite, with two contrasting 18-hole courses wrapped around a historic Grade II listed priory. If you like your golf framed by trees and a bit of plot off the tee, the Priory course is the headline act, a strategic parkland test that rewards position over brute force.

Want something different for your second round? The Moorland, designed by Donald Steel, is more open and can feel a touch more exposed when the wind gets up, so you'll need to keep it on a line and accept that the rough is not there for decoration. Two courses on-site means no shuttles, no re-packing, just 36 holes on tap.

Off the course, you've got the best of both worlds: a characterful historic building with modern comforts, plus a spa and leisure club for anyone who fancies swapping spikes for a robe. It's also a handy one logistically, north of Derby and around 20 minutes from junction 25 of the M1, so it works brilliantly for societies coming from different corners of the UK.

Who is this for?

Weekend golf groups and societies who want 36 holes on-site, a comfortable hotel and an easy Midlands meet-up point off the M1.

Who is it best for?

Golfers who enjoy a tactical, tree-lined round (Priory) but also want a second course that asks different questions (Moorland), plus anyone travelling with non-golfers who'll actually use the spa.

Golf Courses at Delta Hotels by Marriott Breadsall Priory Country Club

Priory Course

The Moorland Course at Breadsall Priory was designed by Donald Steel and opened for play in 1991. Despite being located next to its sister course, the Moorland is a complete contrast and offers a very different round of golf. Where the Priory is tree-lined and sheltered, the Moorland is more open and exposed to the elements, providing a tough challenge that combines fearsome rough with carefully contoured greens.

The Moorland gives you a bit more room off the tee, which sounds like a relief after the Priory's tight corridors, but don't be fooled. The fairways are wider, yes, but the rough is thick and penal, and if you're playing in any sort of breeze, the exposed nature of the course means club selection becomes a real puzzle. The wind can swirl and gust, and what looks like a comfortable 7-iron one minute can suddenly need a 5-iron the next.

The greens on the Moorland are the real defence. They're contoured, often multi-tiered, and if you miss them in the wrong spot you're facing a tricky up-and-down. Steel designed the course to test your short game as much as your ball-striking, and it shows. You'll need to be sharp with the wedges and confident with the putter, because two-putting from 40 feet on some of these surfaces is a result in itself.

What I like about the Moorland is that it asks different questions to the Priory. If you've just played a round where you were threading drives through narrow gaps, the Moorland gives you a chance to open the shoulders a bit and let the driver go. But you pay for any lack of precision on the approach, and the course punishes loose iron play just as severely as the Priory punishes wayward drives.

The variety between the two layouts is a big part of Breadsall's appeal. You can play 36 holes in a day and feel like you've tackled two completely different tests, which keeps things fresh and means you're not just repeating the same shots over and over. For groups, it's ideal, because you've got something to suit different playing styles without having to pack up and drive to another venue.

Breadsall Priory is one of the few resorts in the East Midlands to have two 18-hole courses, making it a great choice for a golf break. Set amidst the lush Derbyshire countryside, the Moorland offers views to equal its neighbour, and the variety between the two layouts ensures you'll want to play both during your stay. If you're planning a weekend trip or a society outing, having 36 holes on-site is a massive plus, and the Moorland more than holds its own as the second course.

Moorland Course

The Championship Priory course is the premier layout at the resort, and since its inception in 1977 it's emerged as one of the standouts locally. The Priory skirts the stunning hotel and requires accurate play to negotiate the tree-lined fairways. Though not particularly long by modern standards, the Priory is demanding, and attracts visitors back again and again with its charm and spectacular views across the Derbyshire countryside.

The course rewards position over power, with tight driving corridors and well-protected greens that punish wayward approach shots. Miss the fairway and you're often blocked out by mature trees, forced to chip sideways or take on a low punch that requires real feel and a bit of nerve. The greens themselves are typically firm and true, with enough subtle borrows to make three-putting a genuine risk if you're above the hole.

What makes the Priory interesting is that it doesn't rely on sheer length to test you. Instead, it's about plotting your way around, knowing when to take on a tight line and when to bail out to the fat side of the fairway. The front nine eases you in gently, but the back nine ramps up the pressure, with a couple of par fours that demand precision off the tee and nerves of steel on the approach.

Drainage is strong, so it's a solid bet for year-round play by UK standards. You're not going to find winter greens here, and even after heavy rain the course tends to hold up well, which is a big plus if you're booking a trip in the shoulder months and don't want to gamble on conditions.

The signature 12th hole, a par 4 of 346 yards, provides spectacular views from an elevated tee. The fairway has a slight dogleg right, and with the pin often placed at the right side of the small green, it's important to hit to the left side so that the tree doesn't block your view on the approach. It's the sort of hole that looks straightforward from the tee but punishes lazy course management, and it's a great example of how the Priory uses angles and obstacles rather than brute yardage to make you think.

If you're a mid-handicapper who likes to shape the ball and plot your way around a course, the Priory will suit you down to the ground. Low-handicappers will appreciate the strategic demands and the need for accuracy, whilst higher handicappers might find the tree-lined corridors a bit unforgiving if the driver's not behaving. Either way, it's a course that rewards local knowledge, so if you're playing it for the first time, take note of the lines and you'll score better on the second round.

Accommodation at Delta Hotels by Marriott Breadsall Priory Country Club

The magnificent stately residence that is now home to Delta Hotels by Marriott Breadsall Priory Country Club has parts dating back centuries, and the historic setting is one of the most spectacular destinations for a golf break in the Midlands. The façade of the Grade II listed construction is in stark contrast to the contemporary facilities that await inside.

The 112 guest rooms are designed and furnished to complement the traditional style of the house, whilst featuring all the modern amenities expected from a top-quality hotel. Rooms are spacious and well-appointed, offering a comfortable base after a day on the fairways, with options to suit couples, groups and families. Many rooms overlook the estate grounds or the courses themselves, so you can watch the early starters head out whilst you're still deciding whether to order another coffee.

The layout works well for groups, with enough variety in room types to accommodate different budgets and preferences, and the public areas retain plenty of the building's original character without feeling stuffy or overly formal. It's the sort of place where you can settle in for a post-round pint without feeling like you need to change out of your golf gear first.

If you're bringing non-golfers or just fancy a bit of downtime between rounds, the spa and leisure facilities are more than just a token add-on. The pool, sauna and steam room are all well-maintained, and the spa treatment menu covers the usual suspects: massages, facials, body wraps and the like. Handy if your group's split between 'another 18?' and 'spa time, please'.

Breakfast is served in the Priory Restaurant, a traditional setting that suits the building. In the evening, you can opt for a more laid-back dining experience at The Cast Iron Bar and Grill, located in a historic wine cellar, where you can enjoy the best of British cuisine. Both venues offer quality food in atmospheric surroundings, making the most of the building's heritage without overdoing the period theme.

The leisure club and fitness centre has a range of cardiovascular training equipment and free weights, in addition to the swimming pool, sauna, steam room and spa pool, so if you're the type who likes to keep up the gym routine even on a golf trip, you're covered. It's a well-equipped resort that gives you plenty of options beyond the golf, which matters when you're trying to keep a mixed group happy.

Breadsall Priory is located north of Derby, 20 minutes from J25 of the M1. Derby train station is approximately 15 minutes away, making it accessible by car or rail. If you're flying in, East Midlands Airport is around 30 minutes up the road, and there are decent road links from most corners of the UK, which is why it's a popular choice for societies drawing members from different regions.

This was a good value trip. The service from the hotel and bar staff was very good. Rooms are a little tired, but the beds were good and the price was not 5 star.

Whilst individually staff are extremely helpful and friendly, overall the hotel fell well below expectations. This is the first time I have stayed in a 4* hotel which didn't provide bedside lamps, the mattress cover was stained and the beds rock hard. Housekeeping was poor: the floors were not cleaned daily, toilet rolls and beverages were not replaced. Breakfast was very good as was the other food but on one occasion we waited over 45 minutes between finishing starters and being served main course. Restaurant staff training in some respects is poor.

It has been several years since I last stayed and the rooms are rather tired and in need of refurbishment. We were disappointed as Gareth had requested an upgrade for one of our party who was celebrating a significant birthday (80) but this was not forthcoming. Dinner was served in the leisure centre grill which had no atmosphere compared with the Priory restaurant which we have used previously, however the food was good and service excellent. Not the hotel to stay at for a celebration.

This hotel is very good at providing a really good golf break, starting with check in (they bring all the forms and keys to you in the bar following your first round. Dinners were well organised with plenty of staff on hand and food arriving pipping hot. Rooms were large with 2 doubles, plenty of wardrobe space, desk etc. The large pool was great and at a nice temperature along with a jacuzzi, steam room and sauna.

Every member of staff was friendly and helpful. The room was perfect and located near to the golf and spa. We arrived early and the room was ready before we played golf.

The only reason I haven't given 4* for "Value for Money" is that outside a hotel/golf package deal, prime time green fees are £55 for a moorland course of average interest.

The group all enjoyed the course which was in very good condition.

One of the hilliest courses I've played in terms of the slope on the fairways and the greens. This is a course that demands good ball striking, getting out of position incurs a penalty. The greens are quite fast and all have pronounced gradients. It's not a long course but don't take it lightly. Has great views and varies between tree lined and fairly open.

Good

A short, very open course with several shots that could come close to other holes. As there were a number of blind tee shots we were surprised that there was very little way of determining when a green was clear. The fairways are quite generous but the rough is thick if you go too far off line. Definitely not as hilly as the Priory course.

This course is overall flatter than the Priory. It is a totally different course which is great when playing both courses.

We only started playing golf 5 years ago and are late 60’s and early 70’s. The Priory course is very challenging but we felt that we coped really well and thorough enjoyed it.
