Arabella Hotel & Spa

9.8
Excellent See all 7 reviews

Perched on the edge of the Bot River Lagoon with the Kogelberg mountains rising behind it, Arabella Country Estate is one of the Western Cape's standout stay-and-play options. It's part of the Starwood Luxury Collection, so you're getting a proper five-star base, but the big draw (needless to say) is the golf. Arabella Golf Club is routinely talked about among South Africa's best, and once you see the fynbos-lined fairways hugging the lagoon, it's not hard to see why.

If you're travelling as a couple, it's an easy sell thanks to the AltiraSPA and the resort feel. If you're coming as a group, the on-site convenience is the win: tee times, food, drinks and recovery time all in one place. And if you're the type who likes a "one more go" course, Arabella absolutely falls into that category.

Who is this for? UK and European golfers wanting a high-end South Africa resort where golf and spa both matter, plus groups who like having everything on-site.

Who is it best for? Mid to low handicap golfers who enjoy strategic golf in the wind, and couples who want golf mornings and proper spa downtime in the afternoons.

Arabella Golf Club

Arabella Golf Club opened in 1998 and was later redesigned by Peter Matkovich, who did a superb job of routing holes along the Bot River Lagoon without making it feel gimmicky. From the back tees it plays to roughly 7,000 yards, so it's a proper championship test, but forward tees keep it friendly for most resort golfers.

What makes it memorable is the contrast: immaculate playing surfaces, then wild fynbos and sandy waste areas waiting to swallow anything loose. Matkovich deliberately left these areas untouched, creating a visual and strategic link to the natural landscape. Add in coastal wind off the water and you've got a course that rewards discipline more than hero golf, especially on the closing stretch. The fairways are generous enough to encourage aggressive play, but the rough wasteland areas and strategically placed bunkers punish wayward shots, and the greens, while receptive, have enough movement to make two-putting far from automatic.

The par threes are a highlight too, with elevation changes and eye-catching backdrops that will have your camera out before you've even picked a club. Several holes play directly alongside the water, others are framed by the Kogelberg peaks in the distance, and the variety in hole design means you'll use every club in the bag. The conditioning is typically excellent, and the greens are consistently rated among the best in the region.

If you're ticking off the country's best layouts, this is one you'll want on the list: one of South Africa's premier golf courses.

Accommodation at Arabella Hotel & Spa

The Arabella hotel carries a five-star deluxe rating, and it's immediately obvious why. Rooms are modern, bright and geared for comfort after a long day on the course, with the sort of finish you'd expect from a Luxury Collection hotel. The design reflects the colours and textures of the surrounding Kogelberg Nature Reserve, so there's a sense of place without it feeling overdone. You'll find spacious layouts, contemporary fittings and the amenities that matter: quality linens, well-appointed bathrooms and views across the lagoon or mountains depending on your room category.

Standards are consistently high, and feedback on service is strong, especially around golfer-friendly touches like early breakfasts, club storage and help with tee times. The staff know how to look after golfers, which makes a difference when you're trying to get out early or need a quick turnaround between rounds.

The AltiraSPA is worth booking even if you only play a couple of rounds. It blends eastern and western spa techniques across a range of treatments designed for deep relaxation, and after a round on Arabella's undulating fairways, a massage or hydrotherapy session is the perfect way to recover. Tennis courts, a fitness centre and walking trails through the estate add to the leisure options, making this a destination where non-golfing partners or family members will find plenty to enjoy.

Dining at Arabella is varied and high quality. The Premier Restaurant is the standout, offering fine dining with views across the lagoon, the menu built around fresh, local ingredients and Cape wines. For something more relaxed, there are additional dining venues on-site, and in the evening, Cristobal's Cigar Lounge provides a refined setting to unwind with a drink and reflect on the day's golf. You can happily stay on-site, though Hermanus is an easy trip if you fancy a change of scene.

Room types range from standard deluxe rooms to suites, all designed with space and comfort in mind. Suites offer separate living areas and larger terraces, ideal for longer stays or groups wanting extra room to spread out. Whichever category you choose, the quality is consistent, and the views, whether of the lagoon, mountains or estate gardens, are uniformly impressive. For golfers, the convenience of being steps from the first tee and the clubhouse makes the hotel an ideal base.

Generally good but getting service in room was a challenge. No phone list in room and took several calls and quite a delay just to get wine glasses. Golf facilities very good but hotel service needs some work

Would recommend this course all day long. Great layout, fantastic condition, fast greens and testing bunkers.

Excellent course but took 5 hours to get round- partly I think because of a weekend Ryder cup tournament for members
