Almenara Golf Club

8.0
Very Good See all 15 reviews

Sotogrande sits in one of the Costa del Sol's smartest golf pockets, and The Alto Club Golf & Academy (formerly Almenara) is right in the middle of it, within easy reach of Gibraltar Airport. If you like variety on a golf break, this is a handy one to have in the mix.

The big plus here is flexibility. You've got two main nines, Los Pinos and Los Lagos, which combine for an 18-hole round, plus Alcornoques, a 9-hole par-3 course that's ideal for a warm-up, a knock-about on arrival day or settling a post-dinner grudge match. There's also The Alto Academy for structured practice and coaching.

The layout was originally designed by Dave Thomas (The Brabazon at The Belfry) and has since been remodelled by Manuel PiƱero. Expect rolling ground, plenty of pine and cork oak, and a course that rewards keeping it in play rather than simply swinging harder. You'll score better if you plot your way round and keep it off the trees.

Sotogrande itself is polished, exclusive and built around golf. The Alto fits that mould perfectly, offering a quality test without the stuffiness that sometimes accompanies top-tier Spanish clubs. You're in one of Spain's best-known golf pockets, with plenty of courses within a short transfer.

Who is this for? Golfers seeking variety, quality and a genuine Spanish golfing experience in one of Europe's most prestigious resort areas.

Who is it best for? Mid-to-low handicappers who value course strategy and enjoy mixing up their rounds, plus groups wanting flexible tee-time options, proximity to Gibraltar and access to top-tier practice facilities.

Golf Courses at Almenara Golf Club

Made up of three incredible loops of 9, that together offer three different par-72 combinations, providing the sort of variety you rarely find in one resort. The gently undulating fairways meander through a striking landscape around the lakes and are bordered by pine, cork and oak trees. Set in the higher area of Sotogrande, the course is less than 500 metres from the legendary Valderrama golf course, host of the Ryder Cup and Volvo Masters.

The Alto Club is a fantastic resort course, providing a genuine challenge for highly skilled players, but Thomas' considerate design and the multitude of tee boxes ensure that the average golfer will not be overwhelmed.

Yet again a very hilly course - not all of us are mountain goats -

The hotel has 27 holes comprising a 3 distinct 9’s, sadly never got to play one of the loops this year but Pinos and Lagos still deliver a great experience. Beware the greens, when we were there, it was like putting on glass, very slick, a great test.

This is a very nice Golf course in very good condition a bit more expensive than others we played but still good value.Very scenic with some challenging holes and very fast greens. Staff were very helpful and friendly, would definitely play it again.

We had one very slow round- 5.5 hrs but the others were around 4 which is average. Some very challenging sloping fairways to make tee shots tricky and a couple of interesting short holes teeing off over edge of hill down onto green.

A buggy is essential due to many changes in elevation on all 3 nine hole loops. Tee areas are in poor condition and devoid of maintenance. Some spectacular holes with great views. Take lots of lake balls!

A surprisingly tough course with some tricky approaches to the greens and few level lies. The only big criticism is that after all the heavy rain in the previous week we saw no maintenance work on the bunkers which played like Blackpool beach at low tide:smooth, hard and wet. But many nice holes in the 3 loops.

This course is made up of three 9 hole courses , the two we played where immaculate ,fairways and greens, for our party this was the best course, we all come off smiling , the club house and courses layout spot on with staff and a good feel factor,it is not used very much as we where told we could go out half an hour early

We played Four rounds of Golf at Almenara, encompassing the three nine hole courses, which made a nice change because on the last two visits one of the courses was closed, annoyingly the same course both times. This was not the fault of the hotel as they proved to me that the agency I used on both those occasions had been informed of the closure but did not inform me, I would advise that anyone contemplating playing here emails the Pro shop first about closures. All three courses were in excellent condition and the greens were superb. It is noticeable that the green staff always stop what they are doing if they think they are encroaching on your game.
