The Costa Del Sol is a haven for world-class golf courses and The Alto Club Golf & Academy (formerly Almenara) fits perfectly into this trend, located in the heart of Sotogrande, not too far away from Gibraltar Airport.

The golf club contains 18 stunning holes, Los Pinos and Los Lagos plus a 9 holes Par 3, Alcornoques and the new the Alto Academy. The layouts were designed by legendary golf course architect Dave Thomas, the man responsible for the creation of some of the world's most revered golf courses including The Brabazon at the Belfry. Recently The Alto Golf have been remodeled by legendary Manuel Piñero.

The course winds its way through the rolling hills of Sotogrande which is one of Spain's most upmarket areas and the quality of the design provides a great test of ability no matter what combination you play it in. When on a golf holiday in this area of the Costa Del Sol a visit to The Alto Club Academy and Golf is an unmissable opportunity.

Golf Courses at Almenara Golf Club

None

Made up of three incredible loops of 9, that together offer three different par-72 combinations, providing the sort of variety you rarely find in one resort. The gently undulating fairways meander through a striking landscape around the lakes and are bordered by pine, cork and oak trees. Set in the higher area of Sotogrande, the course is less than 500 metres from the legendary Valderrama golf course, host of the Ryder Cup and Volvo Masters.

The Alto Club is a fantastic resort course, providing a genuine challenge for highly skilled players, but Thomas' considerate design and the multitude of tee boxes ensure that the average golfer will not be overwhelmed.

Yet again a very hilly course - not all of us are mountain goats -

The hotel has 27 holes comprising a 3 distinct 9’s, sadly never got to play one of the loops this year but Pinos and Lagos still deliver a great experience. Beware the greens, when we were there, it was like putting on glass, very slick, a great test.

This is a very nice Golf course in very good condition a bit more expensive than others we played but still good value.Very scenic with some challenging holes and very fast greens. Staff were very helpful and friendly, would definitely play it again.

We had one very slow round- 5.5 hrs but the others were around 4 which is average. Some very challenging sloping fairways to make tee shots tricky and a couple of interesting short holes teeing off over edge of hill down onto green.

A buggy is essential due to many changes in elevation on all 3 nine hole loops. Tee areas are in poor condition and devoid of maintenance. Some spectacular holes with great views. Take lots of lake balls!

A surprisingly tough course with some tricky approaches to the greens and few level lies. The only big criticism is that after all the heavy rain in the previous week we saw no maintenance work on the bunkers which played like Blackpool beach at low tide:smooth, hard and wet. But many nice holes in the 3 loops.

This course is made up of three 9 hole courses , the two we played where immaculate ,fairways and greens, for our party this was the best course, we all come off smiling , the club house and courses layout spot on with staff and a good feel factor,it is not used very much as we where told we could go out half an hour early

We played Four rounds of Golf at Almenara, encompassing the three nine hole courses, which made a nice change because on the last two visits one of the courses was closed, annoyingly the same course both times. This was not the fault of the hotel as they proved to me that the agency I used on both those occasions had been informed of the closure but did not inform me, I would advise that anyone contemplating playing here emails the Pro shop first about closures. All three courses were in excellent condition and the greens were superb. It is noticeable that the green staff always stop what they are doing if they think they are encroaching on your game.

Don't try and chip from 30 yards on to greens as it was over watered (front 9), book a buggy!

My tips for playing Almenara would be play more short chips with a 8 or 9 iron on the front 9 to avoid burying a wedge

A buggy is a must, it would be hard going on foot.

If it was hot and you didn't have your A game you might feel it was never ending.

Overall most enjoyable.
