Signature Collection

Perched on Tenerife's west coast and just 25 minutes from the South Airport, The Ritz-Carlton Tenerife, Abama is one of those resorts that feels special before you've even checked in. It sits above the Atlantic on dramatic clifftops, so you're treated to big sea views almost everywhere you turn.

Golf-wise, you're looking at a Dave Thomas design, the same architect behind The Belfry's Brabazon. It's widely regarded as the best course in the Canary Islands and it regularly features among the top 35 layouts in Spain. The terrain gives Thomas plenty to work with, so expect elevation changes, exposed stretches where the breeze matters and a layout that rewards plotting your way round rather than simply hitting driver at everything.

Off the course, Abama leans heavily into five-star comfort. You've got 459 rooms and suites, a destination spa, a well-regarded kids' club and dining that goes well beyond the usual resort buffet set-up. It's an easy win for winter sun, particularly for UK golfers who want guaranteed standards, a strong golf test and somewhere that still feels like a holiday for non-golfers too.

Who is this for? Golfers looking for a five-star winter-sun resort with a proper championship course, standout dining and a spa that makes non-golf days feel worth it.

Who is it best for? Confident golfers who enjoy a strategic test, plus couples and groups who care as much about food, pools and downtime as they do about the scorecard.

Abama Golf

Set against the backdrop of the Atlantic shoreline, the modern championship course is adorned with a beautiful array of lakes and waterfalls, while during construction no less than 25,000 trees were planted across the layout.

From the back tee markers, Abama reaches 6,858 yards, which is not particularly long for a modern construction, but visitors will enjoy the terrific variety of holes that designer Thomas has conceived.

Although there are many stand-outs, the 10th is arguably the signature hole, as it dog-legs to the left, bordered on one side by out-of-bounds and on the other by a threatening sequence of lakes.

This resort opened to a fanfare of publicity as it stated its case to be one of the most prestigious resorts in Europe and beyond, and since its inauguration has certainly not disappointed - Dave Thomas' outstanding golf course is a major part of that success.

The Abama Golf Course also boasts a great practice facility, including a dedicated short game area and a three hole par-3 academy course, while the buggies are all fitted with the latest GPS technology and there is a new golf bag storage facility.

Accommodation at The Ritz-Carlton Tenerife, Abama

The Ritz-Carlton Tenerife, Abama occupies 160 acres of clifftop real estate on Tenerife's west coast, and the scale of the place becomes clear the moment you arrive. This is not a compact resort where everything sits within a short stroll, it's a sprawling estate with 459 rooms and suites spread across multiple buildings, all designed to take advantage of the Atlantic views and year-round sunshine.

Accommodation ranges from Deluxe Rooms through to One Bedroom Suites in The Retreat, the latter featuring private pools and a level of seclusion that appeals to golfers who want to unwind properly between rounds. Standard rooms are spacious and well-appointed, each with a private terrace, marble bathroom, Nespresso machine, minibar and air conditioning. The furnishings lean contemporary rather than traditional, and the attention to detail, from the spa amenities to the quality of the linen, reflects the Ritz-Carlton standard.

For those marking a milestone or simply wanting to elevate the experience, the suite options are worth considering. The Royal Suites, located on the 7th and 8th floors of the Citadel building, offer two bedrooms, open-plan living and dining areas with a bar, and expansive terraces designed for families or small groups. At the top end sits the Imperial Suite, a 10,225-square-foot residence with a private rooftop pool and panoramic views across the resort and coastline. It's the sort of space that turns a golf trip into a proper occasion.

The Retreat suites, set within the resort's sub-tropical gardens, provide a quieter alternative. These one and two-bedroom options come with private pools and a sense of separation from the main hub, ideal for couples or anyone who prefers a slower pace off the course. All guests have access to shared pools, and the layout of the resort means you're never far from a sunbed, a bar or a quiet corner to read the yardage book for tomorrow's round.

Dining at Abama is a serious affair. The resort is home to 10 restaurants and bars, including two Michelin-starred venues. M.B, led by Chef Erlantz Gorostiza and named after Spanish culinary legend Martín Berasategui, holds two Michelin stars and serves Basque-inspired cuisine that's as precise as it is indulgent. A meal here is not just dinner, it's an event, and one that sits comfortably alongside the best golf and dining experiences in Europe.

Kabuki, the resort's other Michelin-starred restaurant, brings modern Japanese cuisine to the table courtesy of Seoul-born chef Akira Back, a former professional snowboarder whose menu reflects both creativity and technical skill. Beyond the starred venues, the dining options cover Italian at Verona, fish and seafood at El Mirador, natural and local produce at Verde Mar, and casual beachside fare at The Beach Club. The Lobby Bar and Deli Cafe round out the options, and live music features almost nightly, adding to the post-round atmosphere.

The fitness centre is open 24 hours, equipped with cardiovascular and strength-training equipment, and overlooks the coast, making early-morning sessions more appealing than they probably should be. The Destination Spa, however, is where most golfers will spend their recovery time. Using Cinq Mondes products, the spa features a water circuit that includes a Tepidarium, Hammam, African sauna, herbal steam bath, Kneipp trail, hydrotherapy pool, snow cabin and spa garden. It's designed to reset the body after a long walk on a hilly course, and if you've played 36 holes in two days, you'll appreciate it.

I love this hotel and have stayed twice already this year but this time I was a bit disappointed as there was a lot of renovation work going on. The normal breakfast room was closed so breakfast was in a much smaller room with queues for the toaster etc. There was work going on by one of the pools and big renovation work in the reception area which was unattractive and noisy. I understand that they need to get these things done but from a 5 star hotel I expect better. Staff were as professional and charming as ever and the bedroom and bathroom wonderful.

The hotel is fantastic. Very luxurious and so clean. Very good facilities. Many restaurants to choose from but quite expensive. Drink was quite expensive also. The golf course is challenging but in great condition.

A most enjoyable experience. This hotel was as good as any we have stayed at.There was not a single thing that we could comment on negatively. The restaurants were with the possible exception of the Spanish restaurant all excellent and we would specifically mention the fish restaurant.

This hotel is excellent. Service very friendly and efficient. Not all the restaurants were open but we had plenty of choice and the quality of the food throughout was very good - exceptional for the Japanese Michelin starred restaurant. Not cheap although not as expensive as we had been led to believe.

The greens are far too fast. A ball can miss the pin by an inch and finish up in a bunker

We enjoyed our four games during our week. I thought that the course was a delight to play. The only reason for mentioning that the rounds were slow was we were a two ball following fours.Staff were helpfull and obliging. Overall a pleasure and one that we would wish to repeat.

We really enjoyed the course. Good condition and from the yellow tees testing enough for holiday golf with some good driving holes. All well organised. The course is quiet in summer when the resort is more a conventional holiday destination, busier I was told in winter when it is more golf. We had one round in 3 1/2 hours - fantastic. Only one course - we had 4 days of golf which was fine - more than that and you might need more variety. Good practice area with free balls

It is a great golf course in excellent condition. The 10 minute gaps between tee times ensures that play is comfortable with no hassle.
